you'll get the best info from the reviews anandtech has done. dfi ultra-d performs as well as sli-dr, but without full sli. I've heard there's a mod for sli on that board. oc features are beautiful for dfi of course! as far as I've read, the a8n-sli is pretty good. definitely read the review. anandtech as always has the most complete reviews. it includes (i think) a comparison in performance to the asus mobo. stock spds are good, but dfi really kicks ass ocing. they got it to 318 mhz fsb. all nforce4 dfi's have the same performance divided by extra features

I've had both Asus and DFI. Not those exact boards, but I've had good luck from both of them. Chances are that Asus will have your basic overclocking features as well. With that said, I agree with Computer MAn. Look for the one that has the features that you will actually use and care about. Then check the prices.

It's like trying to convince my mother to get the Sports package with a car... she doesn't need it, but its cool.

Not everyone has to RMA their A8N-SLI. Mine has been working 100% stable since day one. Go with whichever has the features you want and price you can afford. The Asus is a real beast and if I could ever afford to fill all the ports/slots I'd be one happy man.

The DFI board is far far better if your overclocking but otherwise there is nothing wrong w/ the Asus board as long as you get the latest revison and bios. So in this case since your not overclocking I'd shop purely based on price and features.

Its a toss up. Asus OCs very nicely, but the DFI OC's better.

They both have the same amount of features in general.

Just base everything on price.

To answer the other questions the reason you have heard of so many problems with the A8N-SLI is because so many people have it. Not many have the DFI board. DOesn't mean that Asus is crap because they are very high quality, just not as good as DFI.

My choice would be DFI,they seem to get spec balance/overclocking and price right, also remember they are using quality 100% Japanese capacitors.

The DFI board looks pretty strong. That's the one I would be buying...but I'm holding out for the Rev. E Winnies.

Yeah except the DFI IIRC has better onboard audio.

Other than that they are ahve essentially the same features give or take one or two ports.

The DFI uses the same audio codec as the ASUS A8N-SLI.

DFI claims "Karajan" improves audio quality but tests show that's not quite what happens.

http://www.techreport.com/reviews/2004q4/dfi-775lanpartys/index.x?pg=10
"So much for Karajan audio's superior clarity. The LANParty boards don't rise above the competition in RightMark Audio Analyzer, but they're not any worse, either. Based on uncompressed CD-quality WAV playback through a pair of Logitech Z-680 speakers (using analog outputs), the LANParty boards' audio quality isn't discernibly superior to the other boards, at least not to my ears. If you're looking for a real jump in audio output quality, I suggest checking out sound cards like the M-Audio Revolution 7.1 and Philips Ultimate Edge."

Though I think it's nice to have the onboard sound out of the board.

the DFI does not have a parallel port as well, if that is something that you need.

Most of the complaints about the Asus board come from PSU issues or the inability to get a really good overclock out of the board. If you are not going overclock, the Asus is a good choice. It's a bit cheaper and easier to find. Not to mention the Asus does SLI out of the box.

Since no one every seems mention this. With Asus you can flash the bios in windows. You don't have to do the lame process of using a floppy disk and rebooting.

I think the A8N-SLI is great, I have had mine since early December and have had not a single issue with it and I am running 4 hard drives and two optical drives off of it with two GTs and 2GB or RAM. Very stable and fast. ASUS has proven to be a good company in the past, and nVidia must have worked closely with them during its development as it was the board they used to show SLI off during the months coming up to its release. Plus I have been seeing more DFI issues poping up in the forums now that more people have them. Every board is going to have issues with the amount of different configurations that are out there, none are going to be perfect.
