DHCP client service not working

Hi

I have Vista premium 32 and recently had a problem when the computer was turning back on from sleep mode.

I could tell something was wrong because it was running extremely slow. It was so slow I couldn't even bring up already open programs so I restarted..

1. Now I can't get internet, it says my DHCP client is not running, it determines that "A problem with my router might be preventing an internet connection.." (I live in an apartment, just plug into the wall).

2. At boot up it says that C++ redistributional or something messed up

3. My antivirus (Kaspersky) tells me that it can't connect to some windows client service.. even though I am Admin.


Sooo.. I have scanned computer for viruses, and system restored to 2 previous points and nothing is different.
Edit: Both system restore attempts have failed.


I'm wondering if I am doomed to reformat.

it honestly sounds like your hard drive is having a problem reading files. go through a few steps first though before doing anything drastic.

go to run - type services.msc - check that the dhcp service is running automatically. if it wasn't, pull up a dos window and do ipconfig /flushdns and try internets

if that doesn't fix it, then you need to do a general diagnostic

Make a rescue disk with kaspersky. If it shows up clean I'd do a quick check of the system using a diagnostic boot cd. I like ultimate boot cd.

if all those fail then you have some real work ahead of you.

I tried flushing dns.. result: "Could not flush the DNS resolver Cache: function failed during execution"

I tried using some program called "Drive Health" by Helexis to check disk drive health and it said it was working fine.. though after closing it and trying it again windows tells me "internal widnows error".

I used SeaTools (Seagate diagnostic) and it passed.

I reckon I'll just reformat... long night ahead of me

So I backed up everything I wanted to keep on my computer and I put in the Vista reinstall disk and it says:

"Windows could not load required file WinSetup.dll. The file may be corrupt. To install Windows, restart the installation. Error code: 0x45A." !!!

BUT no solution!!
