So I ordered a Canon 20D to replace my stolen Canon Digital Rebel from Dell. Got them to apply the 10% discount on Digital Cameras even though the 20D is specifically excluded! Wooohooo

Anyways, they shipped it DHL Ground on Tuesday. The only good thing about it was it arrived very quick. It got to the local warehouse on Wednesday morning at about 8am.

This is where the problems begin. The package doesn't make it on the truck for Wednesday ... Ok, understandable, it was shipped ground anyways.

Thursday rolls around and its on the truck. They place a note in the tracking stating that delivery was attempted at 1pm and that I needed to call them.

I call them at about 1:15p to find out what the problem is. After being put on hold for about 10 minutes a rude CSR answers the phone and as I tell him that it says a delivery was attempted, he interrupts me and puts me back on hold saying I need to talk with the attempted delivery person. 5 minutes later he answers again asking what I want ... I explain that he spoke with me earlier and put me on hold for the attempted delivery guy. He puts me on hold again for a minute, and returns saying the attempted delivery guy isn't here. He takes my airbill number and tells me they couldnt find my house. Couldn't find my house? wtf, my house isn't that hard to find and UPS/FedEx never seem to have any problems. I should note that this is the 2nd time DHL (back then it was Airborne Express) couldn't find my house. Maybe I should have expected it. In any case, he tells me that he'd page the driver and have him re-deliver it with the directions I provided.

I get home from work at about 4:00p to find no package delivered. Give them till 5pm and call up to find out whats going on. Wait on hold for another 10 minutes to speak with someone and find out that the package is back in the warehouse and will be delivered on Friday! Again, wtf? So I tell him to hold the package for me, and I'll pick it up.

I get there, and the person in front of me tells me that its going to be awhile because only one person is working. Its finally my turn and the lady runs into the back to find the package. 20 minutes later she comes back and says she found it ...

Jeez! The only good thing about the DHL service is that it arrived at the warehouse in 1 day. However, if I had waited to it to be delivered, it would be Friday before it actually made it here, possibly Monday if the guy got lost again.

Maybe its just the local DHL warehouse thats all messed up, but I was extremely underwhelmed with their service. Its a shame that Dell uses DHL as their main shipper because I'll be thinking twice about ordering from Dell in the future.

Anyone else have horror stories about DHL? I know I've heard a bunch from UPS and FedEx, but so around here at least .. both UPS and FedEx deliver things on time and with no problems. If its a signature required and I'm not home ... it never takes more than a few minutes to retrieve my package from their warehouse.

DHL also leaves packages in front of door--without signing!

Their delivery was so bad that USPS and Microsoft stopped using them.

We use DHL daily (20-80 packages) and I can't tell you the last time we had a problem.

Sounds like your particular location may not be worth a crap.

ALL HOME DELIVERY SUCKS!

When will people get this through their thick skulls? These companies don't care about home customers! Deal with it.

I've had stuff delivered to them at work, and they are great. However, I've had a ton of problems for everything they've delivered to my home. I think the problems seems to be with them trying to impress businesses and not giving a flying fvck about private customers.

according to their commercial, they're the best while Fedex and UPS duke it out.

HOW CAN YOU NOT BELIEVE THEIR COMMERCIAL ?!?

Fedex has been good to me. They will either deliver to my neighbor, who I've asked them to deliver to when I'm gone, or he takes it around the back of the house for me.

Yeah the local FedEx and UPS guys are pretty good in my neighborhood too. DHL is the only company I've had problems with.

I find it funny that DHL barely existed until they became the only people to deliver to Afghanistan and Iraq. Now they got new trucks with new uniforms and seem to be rolling in the money. They must have gotten a whole lot of damn tax dollars to almost remake their entire company.

that was not a horror story, that was a "i'm a whiny bitch" story, IMHO. anyway, how come everyone comes here to complain when they know that the people on this board can do absolutely nothing about it, and why do i read it? who is more stupid? I gotta find better things to read when work is slow.

DHL once left my package leaning on the front gate post, right necxt to the sidewalk. anybody from the street could have just reach over and take it. the front door to my house is a good 75' back from the front gate. usually fedex, ups, and usps walk up to my front door, and leave the package where its not easily visible from the sidewalk if noboy is home.

My company had an account with Airborne Express which was then bought by/merged with DHL. After that, they lost several packages. I say they suck!

Has anyone used their craptacular service that involves the USPS? They deliver it the local post office, then the mail man brings it to your house? WTF is that? Why not just deliver it to the customer?

I had much better luck when they were Airborne Express.

I didn't come here to ask the AnandTech community to help me out or fix DHL. I came here to share my story and see if anyone else had problems with DHL. Like I said in my original post, maybe its just my local DHL office that sucks. And while horror story may have been too strong of a phrase for my story, I don't think I'm whining. I'm just asking for the same service that I'm paying for when I use UPS or FedEx.

I would expect that a delivery company would be able to find my house. (Hell, my GPS Navigation system can find it, MapQuest can find it ... why can't a company that depends on getting to addresses for a living do it?). I would expect that after I call to give directions to my house @ 1:30p that a delivery person would come back out the same day to make the delivery. Maybe I'm asking too much of DHL, but thats why I prefer UPS and FedEx.

Oh and Insane3D, the USPS service is because DHL can't find your house ... Well, at least they can't find mine

DHL sucks HUGE balls. I had a $300 package delivered to me. I didn't even realize it had been delivered until I went outside to get the mail and the package was sitting on my porch.... right in the middle of fvcking-steal-me-ville. I was so pissed. They didn't even knock or ring the door bell. :|

DHL rocks in my experience. Cheap, fast delivery.

It's YMMV with any shipping solution, though.

Although it would be better (for them) if theyweren't having such little problems.

I saw a package laying in my stair well (we have a mailroom so dhl didn't put it there), but that's not the point it was all torn and beat up. Bleeding packing popcorn....

DHL Ground = the ownage. As I've stated on these boards before, I use them for the majority of my eBay packages (packages over 2 lbs or so) and have shipped off hundreds of packages. Only had 2 issues which were resolved quickly:

(1) Driver delivered a package to S. Main St. instead of N. Main St.
(2) Driver left a package right in front of the person's garage door (WTF?). I think you see where there is going...person gets in car inside garage, opens garage door with automatic opener, backs out and CRUNCH!

Nah...I'm right off two major highways, I don't live in an apartment, and Fedex and UPS never have a problem.

I guess it depends on location. I've had tons of deliveries and never had a problem with Fed Ex. I had one issue with UPS, but otherwise many problem free deliveries from them. I never tried DHL. Maybe I've been lucky. I have heard some horror stories.
