I think the point is that since it's predictable, it's your own fault for thinking it would be any different although generally I'd give Blizzard the benefit, once they said online only pretty much points to problems on release day.

The problem with that logic is "thinking it would be any different" is NOT required in order to complain.

Example: I hate seafood. I expect to hate my dinner at red lobster. I go to red lobster with the GF, and complain about the crappy seafood later. Was it predictable that the food would be crappy seafood? Sure, but that doesn't negate my right to complain.

In fact, some people take the other side of the argument- they will say you can't complain about the crappy online service for the game or the crappy seafood until you at least give it an honest try.

So yeah, I expected D3 to be terrible on day one, but I could NOT complain about it beforehand because you can't complain about a problem that doesn't yet exist. And now you try to tell me I can't complain about it after the fact because it should have been predictable? What kind of sense does that make?

I won't be buying it due to the constant internet connection requirement.
My DSL cuts out randomly for a minute or so, so I know its a losing battle.

OP checking back in here just to update anyone curious I was on within 2 hours of getting home from midnight release at GameStop (was out of there and home by 12:30 or so, I had it already installed from digital purchase on desktop and laptop both but I had bought a hard copy for the booklet, cd, box and gave the serial key for that one to my gf) so I was on by like 2:30am and played to level 10 on my demon hunter until about 5:30am, I was satisfied, it went pretty smoothly for those 3 hours.

I'll play more tonight but probably after some sleep.

Oh and btw, I'm blessed to be the sort of person who does not even begin to give a shadow of a shit about ladders, or staying ahead of other people... I just want to experience the story, and occasionally play through with gf or a couple close friends I've gamed with since 1994 when we were all 14. We all played Diablo 1 together, less so Diablo 2 but somewhat... so I like to have the option to run some dungeons with them but for now I'm focused on just seeing the story for the first time more.

I will bitch about the online requirement for single player until the end of time, I've known about it for months, doesn't matter... it will never stop being a bad decision worth bitching about.

Not only for the submarine reason but also due to the fact that my net connection is somewhat unstable like the llama guy above me, it's not DSL but the cable cuts out on a fairly regular basis...

Then don't order seafood? If you know you don't like seafood, then ordering it still makes it your problem. I'm confused how that helps your case. I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying it's predictable and anyone who thought otherwise is fooling themselves. Once they have your money, there is no out. At least at a restaurant you can sometimes get a discount or refund. Software has you by the balls, and anyone preordering in this digital age and then complaining when things don't work out of the box are just crazy. These days you should just wait for the GOTY edition so all the kinks are worked out (cough). Preordering or day 1 purchase just reinforces the mentality that they can "fix it later", or paying to Beta.

For some games, this is fine, but for a forced connection to a server game regardless of SP or MP, it shouldn't fly.

Actually if you read Blizzard's fine print the $59.99 you pay for the game is getting you a license to not only play, but to bitch to the high heavens.

So, stop like, repressing us man.

Sometimes crappy seafood is the only seafood option. But since "crappy" is subjective maybe it wasn't the best example.

So lets try another:

McDonald's has messed up my order in the past. I'm sure they will mess it up again in the future, yet I might still eat there on some occasions because the combination of low price, fast food, and convenience outweighs the occasional annoyance of them completely messing up my order.

I certainly don't order McDonald's expecting them to mess up my order, but I do realize it's a possibility that may occur again. I certainly don't want them to mess up my order, but it is a risk I am forced to take if I want convenient fast cheap food. If they do mess up my order I will indeed complain.

In the same way, I knew it was possible for the Diablo 3 servers to be broken on day one. I did not want them to be down, but I had to take that risk to get the game I wanted. I didn't order a game with broken servers though, and I never signed away my right to complain.

These days you should just wait for the GOTY edition so all the kinks are worked out (cough).

That is like saying if you want the MacDonald's without the risk of it them messing up your order you buy your food at 3AM when nobody else is around and business is really slow. In other words, you throw away the entire reason for making the purchase in order to make sure the purchase comes out 100% "right".

Diablo 3 is a multiplayer game. Leveling is something of a group activity. You can't just buy it a few days after it's been released and level with friends who started playing on release, because you will be too far behind to ever catch up.

What is the last game I played that required me to be online for single player?

None. Don't ASSume.

huh? this post makes no sense...I don't know what games you played personally. there are plenty of games that require online for SP. Let me guess, you don't know that most UBISOFT games require(d) you to be online the entire time too?

That is like saying you can't complain about EA games being garbage because we have had past EA games that have been garbage.

Just because something is predictable doesn't mean it's acceptable.

never said it was acceptable. just said it should be expected based on pretty much EVERY online game in existence.

This might be one looooong day.

Finally got in, and my character is a level 0 Unknown. Couldn't start the game or choose another character.

Do some errands and come back, now stuck on Authenticating in the menu past the time it should have timed out.
