Dial-up gaming

Are any of the current FPS's (BF*, Call of Duty, UT2004, Far Cry) any good on multiplayer over dial-up?

You can just about play UT2k4 assault with dialup. I managed to do almost OK with 250+ ping (250~300).
It isn't awesome, but it's not too bad.
Onslaught doesn't seem to work, vehicles/turrets don't display properly, nor does the radar/node health. It sucks
Haven't tried DM, DD or CTF yet.

i'm afraid that dialup isn't good enough for playing fps games online, unless you don't mind letting lpb getting free frags..

Battlefield is horrible over dial-up. It is very bandwidth intensive.

Well would these games run OK over a 128/128 connection with pings around 100ms?

UT2k4 will be fine, it's almost playable with pings on around 300ms. (Almost, but could be quite a bit better).

No, its a fixed-wireless connection.

Fixed wireless? weird. Do you mean like the cellular wireless? Wireless isn't the best for gaming, but it should get the job done.

No, its where you have a radio on top of your house that has direct line of sight to an ISP's access point. It's 802.11b. Check out this link.

Oh yeah, that stuff. Well, it is better than dialup, but wireless still isn't great for gaming since it can drop alot of packets.

Dial-up modems blow chunks for FPS gaming. You can get away with simpler games like RTSes and RPGs but not FPSes.

Not quite, dude, have you tried it? I play Counter-strike with 32 people very beautifuly at 56k with 200ms pings.

Oh yes, many times.

Now try a LAN with <10 ms ping.

BF does not like modems. It just has too much data to move.

if you get your dial up 50k+ its alright well for me it is, i play halo and am planning on buying some interent speeding up software to get it to maybe 56k. halo is very playable at that speed, im not too sure about other fps games though.

Yep, my modem connects at 50.6 kbps. I should be ok.

I recently played COD and HALO and I had no serious ping problems with them
Can't say the same with UT2K4 though.
I'm installing ADSL this summer so thingz would be better for me...
