Dial-Up ISP Recommendations

My parents are in their late 70's, retired and living in FL (where else). Anyway, they asked me to recommend a good, inexpensive and reliable dial-up internet service provider with an accelerator. The only other requirement is that they should offer free technical support. Now, while my parents are not power surfers and do not need dsl or cable they do need a reliable service. That said, they are on a fixed income and the lower the price the better. Recommendations would certainly be appreciated.

If the OP can get this price then I would definitely go with DSL.

Otherwise here's a list of cheap dialup providers.

I live in FL and Bellsouth is not available here, so it certainly depends on where you live. I know of only one DSL here (through Sprint, now Embarq) and it is $35 or $45 a month depending on services you get bundled with it. When it it down (rarely), I use Earthlink free dial-up or Netzero free dial-up and they have both been very reliable. I haven't used the accelerator feature so I don't know how much less painful it makes dial-up.

Good luck on finding something for them.

Thanks Rossman and the others for the recommendations. As Allisolm noted, Bellsouth DSL is not available where they live in FL. Allisolm, mentioned that Earthlink has free dial-up? I checked their web site and didn't see any info about this. Most likely she has a high speed Eartlink account and gets the dial-up free as a customer. If I'm wrong I would certainly appreciate any info about the free Earthlink dial-up. Lastly, Netzero stiill has free dial-up but only 10 hours a month. My parents need more than 10 hours. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Why don't you just move them into a cave? One visit to a YouTube 50 cent music video and you're gonna have to dump that ancient ****** and get them some real internet.

How about ATT? In our area they offer 768/128 DSL for $14.99/month for existing customers. No contracts, not an introductory price, just $15/month for as little or as long as you want to use the service.

Thanks Frosted flakes, I'll look into that although my parents have said they wanted to stay at $ 10 per month. We'll see if I can swing them in that direction.

The Toast ISP dial-up plan looks real good. It includes the accelerator in the $9.95 monthly plan. Also, their reviews are very good. I think I will go with them.

Thanks everyone for your help....

allvantage is sending all their customers to People PC. Is there something better? I don't like how they automatically transferred my account over and billed me higher than what I signed up for.

My neighbor had Allvantage, which of course is switching to People PC-- I just signed him up for AT&T DSL for ten bucks a month. We installed the modem on Wednesday and he is tickled pink.

Never, ever, ever, ever, EVER use People PC. My cousin uses dialup(can't get DSL his area). His local IP was boughtout by People PC, and the service went to crap.

He's actually called up People PC, and they claimed that 'disconnection of the service randomly is normal, because we don't believe people need to use our service longer than 2-3 hours at a time.'

That enough pisses me off.

Dammit I hate calling ISP's to cancel because they'll try and keep you on the phone forever to change your mind

You just tell them no. You have to be firm. Cut them off if you need to because the AOL guys do go on forever.

T-Mobile 5.99 Edge Tzones tethered runs faster than Dialup

I suggest not using their dial up programs and create a manual connection with dial up

NetZero as you noted has 10hr/month free.

You can also setup a Juno account for free and get another 10/hrs month.
