One day I think I'll go anywhere between 2-3... depends on setting and all the other factors to a diamond. Rather have an amazingly clear 2 rather than a cheap 3. I know diamonds are a rip off, but whatever makes them happy. I can think of tons of stuff that I've gotten that's worthless, but makes me happy.

Oh I understand entirely. Poor guy.

they're not even 22 yet.

oh man... does she have no concept of money? Does she come from a wealthy family or something? I hope they're willing to put up the $30k for the wedding

I'd introduce her to the curb

Platinum 3-prong setting
3 stone ring
Center Diamond: .54 Ideal Cut, Color, and Symmetry (perfect diamond, esentially)
2 side stones: .3 each - Very Good Cut, Color, and Symmetry (next to perfect diamonds)

So 1.14 total weight, but next to flawless quality. I'm giving it to her this month

All this makes me think of what Jonah Goldberg once wrote on National Review Online:

"'Every kiss begins with Kay.' If this is literally true, then your wife's a whore."

That's what I got my wife for engagement/ prior to marriage. I'm not a big fan of diamond but you have to do what you have to do.

Way to set a precident.... how long have you been married?

4yrs. Was merely following custom. All the stuff cost under 30k total.

1.25 carat center stone. Another 1 carat of smaller stoners in a channel setting on the sides. Platinum...

She had the option of an engagement ring or getting a house six months sooner. She went with the house.

She has a cubic zirconia ring and earrings when she needs to wear something fancy. No one notices the difference.

None. My wife just wears a band that matches mine. No stone.

Screw the diamond monopoly. I don't need to line their pockets.

I'd rather not have a woman so shallow she'd prefer a diamond over a car or an entire living room set

How the hell is buying a "car he can be proud of" at less than 22... he should be driving a beater, and be putting money away... sounds like they are meant for each other, they're both stupid.

What custom is that?... I spend 5k on my fiancee.... I think that's pretty damn good... 30K!!! just wow... I guess you must be pretty established by now, or have very rich very generous parents.

Why is a woman shallow for wanting to follow tradition? Her mother and the women before her got some type of engagement gift that was appropriate at the time. Diamonds are what we give and you should be happy to follow that tradition, then go and get the house and a car and a living room set.

If your girl doesn't want to follow the tradition then good for you, but don't take something away from her that she might be really looking forward to because you are anti-tradition or just cheap. You don't have to spend thousands. Women want the ring because of what it signifies. Any ring you give her will be very special to her. The only reason she would get upset would be if she knew you were quite well off financially and you were exceedingly cheap.

Segregation was tradition in the South about 50 years ago, doesn't mean that it still needs to be done....

When you buy a diamond, you basically fund DeBeers, which is exploiting Africans and pouring money into buying weapons for genocidal civil wars....

Congratulations, you fvcked over the black man again to follow tradition...

I would think a .75 - 1ct would be sufficient. Anything bigger and the ring is gonna snag stuff all the time.
