Long career diminished by last few years.

Now we have another fight about getting replacements on her committees seated.
Yep! Looking forward to Democrats nuking another small part of the filibuster here when Republicans refuse to permit her replacement on judiciary.

To be fair to Feinstein she was just a Senator. Sticking around "too long" has limited consequences? Especially compared to flipping SCOTUS.
Also, at some point the aging process has afflicted them to the point where rational decision making is out the window. Hard to blame them for their disability at that point.

As a life-long Democrat and 25 year Californian, Dianne was OK in my book. She did what she was elected to do…represent the interests of her state’s citizenry. (especially the Dems)
She did stay in office too long however. IMO, she should have retired about 20 years ago.

Republicans will now filibuster any replacement for her on the judiciary committee, meaning Democrats can't confirm any new judges. It's a big deal.

The Republicans have managed to create so much dissatisfaction leading to so much projection of blame that generally speaking, we as American citizens will not allow ourselves to have good things. The worse you feel and don’t know it, the more you love that others should join you in misery. If we could find a way to deal with that we could have good judges.

I think they would argue we do have good judges because they view judges as a way to enact policy changes Republicans could never do through normal legislation.

I think it’s f-ing disgusting that she or who ever was helping her thought the situation was bad enough that she had to stick around instead of retiring peacefully. Everyone in Congress should be ashamed of themselves!

Nah - she was doing important work. Public service is supposed to be about putting the country before yourself. If you don't want to do that fine, but don't run for office then.

How does this affect the candidates running now? Newsom is likely to appoint Barbara Lee. Greatly increases her chances to win in 2024 over Schiff and Porter.

Funny you should suggest that when recent news suggested that Newsom wouldn't appoint Lee:

Everyone ends up that way, or passes earlier.
Age limits should exist.
Not true.
Not everyone slips into Dementia or loses their mental faculties as they age. I've known people in their (upper) 90s who were still sharper than many. Doesn't mean I would want them in Congress.
I do agree on the age limits, to be sure.

Ah yes. Everything is impermenant. Our youth gives way to old age, and finally death. No one escapes this reality.
This, however, is true...unless of course they die at a younger age.

- He's making the right decision, but I'm betting that whoever he picks is gonna get a taste of the good life and run anyway with the whole "I want to give the citizens of California a choice" schtick.

With the absolute circus that is happening in the house right now, Senate Republicans might be choosing discretion as a wiser course of action here. Last thing the Pubs need right now is to be seen as a party of dysfunction across the board from their House Majority to their Presidential Candidate to the Senate as well.

Honestly modern Pubs are acting more like mid-00's Dems with the amount of shootings of the foots that have been going on recently. We have undergone a shadow flip in the parties here that will take another 20 years to sus out.

I remember the time when the Pubs were the marching in lockstep party, but those times seem like a distant memory now.
