"Our competitors are getting lazy," he said. "They're using the same engine, the same recipe for building a game. At some point you need to take that leap. I haven't seen them take that leap since a long time ago.

"We are doing that now. They had better watch out. We are coming for them."

Snip

"Our competitors keep building very, very high tempo games. We want to tell a story with more drama curves. It's not about pumping round after round for six hours,"

I think the masses may disagree with that statement. 6 hours is obviously too long. Call of Duty 7's only going to be 3 hours long, but it will include 5 or 6 hours of DLC.

I think DICE is right, they have leverage over EA...D: I also think they are the premier PC game designer as of now.

Infinity Ward did some great things visually with Modern Warfare 2, but I do hope DICE can give them a run for their money. I just don't know if the Battlefield formula has enough mass appeal to win out - people don't like being stuck somewhere way out of the action. Well, some people like that... but most prefer instant action, immediate spawns and only being a corner away from the next gunfight...etc.

Yeah, but Starcraft 2 took how long? Diablo 3? And dont get me started on HL2 Episodic content...
I'd rather have developers take a long time to release games than get an unplayable alpha version released, a la Battlefield 2.

The games blizzard and valve release are incredibly polished and bug free.

Not to mention post release support for their games.

the masses aren't buying the games for single player. to the majority the length of the single player part is irrelevant

I would have to disagree with this. Personally, I buy games primarily for the single player content. The only games I have played online extensively are COD4, Company of Heroes, and the old Battle for Middle Earth 2 because there were a lot of fun custom maps. Some people criticise single player games for lack of replayability, and that is true. At least with single player games though, you get a new storyline with each game. But for instance with Call of Duty, I tried to play multiplayer in MW2 and Black Ops, but it didnt seem much different from COD4, while at least you got a new campaign in single player.

Anyway, there was an earlier thread about single player vs multiplayer in these forums, and I think it was about 50/50 as to whether people bought the game for single player or multiplayer. And look at the Mass Effect games, they sold well for single player. So I think it is fair to say some people buy mainly for multiplayer, but there is still a fairly large group that wants a good single player experience.

I believe most developers are lazy and lack vision. It seems that each sequal's number (i.e. Hitman -2-) is purely reference to how many maps and features they're removing when compared to the older version of the game.

I wouldn't say bug free, but yea polished beyond what any other company is willing, and then supported well beyond when their released as well. That's why they're some of the few companies that get my money.

Just because you prefer singleplayer games doesn't mean the majority of people do. Sales have shown that multiplayer games is what people want.

i stopped caring about DICE a loooooooong time ago

This is probably most accurate. BF3 is Dice's chance to redeem themselves and show they're relevant again. Everything looks on track so far, but it really is too early to call.

I'd rather have developers take a long time to release games than get an unplayable alpha version released, a la Battlefield 2.

Seriously. BF2 had absurd problems with dolphin diving essentially from day one, and every patch they put out made the game worse.
And people are too quick to toot Blizzard's horn. Everyone has completely forgotten exactly how messy WoW launch was, don't seem to acknowledge Blizzard's often ham-fisted and illogical class balancing in WoW even to this day, and SC2 still has fairly serious balance issues.

I love Dice but I have to disagree. Blizzard and Valve are superior IMO.

I'm sorry, did you guys just forget about Relic? Is this even up for discussion if we look at their back catalogue for the last 10-15 years?

What about them? Fantastic studio, but bugs and balance are something they've seriously struggled with for nearly as long as I can remember (DoW, CoH, DoW2 -- don't remember HW issues well enough).

To be honest RELIC only make RTS games. Then again, Valve only make FPS games. Whats portal? An FPP? First Person Puzzle game?
