How did you get over it?

I've been having issues staying motivated in school since senior year in high school. I thought getting away from home would help so I went away for school, but I was miserable there and got terrible grades so I came back home. I'm at a community college now and in my third semester overall, and I'm still doing terrible. I know what's wrong with me, I get psyched up for every semester thinking I will try this time but I never change any of my habits. This semester looks like it's going down the drain too. I want to try to fix things but it may be too late for this semester.

Try a different major? Or maybe college isn't really what you want to do with your life, and you just haven't consciously realized that yet?

Why dont you take some time off from school and work for a while until you figure out what you really want to do, and then go back to college when you are serious.

If you really dont want to be there right now, maybe you shouldnt be, or maybe you need to find a major that you like. If you dont like the classes enough to focus and work hard, mabye its the wrong area for you. what is your major? what are your career goals?

Of course no one here did poorly in college, this is ATOT fool. Everyone here graduated at 16, makes 400,000 dollars a year, dates a supermodel, and could beat up Jackie Chan and The Rock at the same time.

Maybe you should seek some counseling, sounds like you might have some unresolved issues that may be keeping you from being productive.

i did HORRIBLE my first 2 years of college. i was receiving warnings evrey semester for being on the verge of suspension. changed my major to something i discovered i enjoyed more... it helped a bit, but what helped the most was befriending people in the major, getting actively involved in academic related activity (officier of club), building rapport with professors, etc...

made classes funner to go to. had study groups to share ideas with. etc... grades went steadily up last 5 semesters of school, and culminated with 4.0 my very last semester (in fact the first time in my life i had a 4.0!!! [3.8 student from middle to high school])

I did very poorly for the first three years, and got kicked out twice; the second time being permanent.

Got a job at Merrill Lynch that paid me 3x what some of my college grad family members were making, and then after 3 yrs of that decided to finish school.

Quit job, applied at a different university, transferred any non D/F class credits from my 3 bad yrs, and graduated 2 yrs later; Sumna Cum laude too!

Sometimes, its just not the right time. I was alot more motivated and intent on finishing school and doing well the second time around. The first time i just wanted to have fun.

I'm not very motivated in my current school as well. Hopefully when I transfer schools and live at home instead, I'll become more motivated. I have a 2.8 GPA which isn't terrible, but it isn't great either.

i find i do better on shorter quarters than a semester where i slack off atleast 50% of the sem and then try play catch up the last 25.

I agree with some of the above posts. I did horribly in College at first. For me, I dropped out for a year and worked for my father (construction type stuff) and hated it so much that I re-enrolled in county college, got straight A's and never looked back. I was a C student in high school but I guess I felt like county college was my last shot at not flipping burgers for the rest of my life so I got "scared straight".

I'd swear that you were writing about me OP. I'm in the same boat right now, working 40 hours a week and hating it, and taking 15 credits and hating it. It just isn't any fun for me. I'm envious of those people that always say "college was the best time of my life." Because right now, it has the be the worst time for me. I'm hoping that making some changes here in the next few weeks will open things up for a better future. But I totally know what you feel like right now.

Don't give up.

I did poorly towards the end of High School.
Then I had a career goal, and with that came motivation, and so far success.

I didn't do well my first two years at a CC, but then I graduated with an AA and went to a 4 year university.

Work for a few years, read about other cultures, and travel to see how the other half of the people live.

The above may give you a better view/incentive to complete of goal/s.

Tick: I have thought about switching majors. I think I would do better in a humanities-type major rather than engineering which I'm doing now, but I can't think of what I would want to do in another field after I graduate. I also don't want to feel like I failed at engineering and couldn't cut it.

Sometimes I do feel like college is not what I want to do with my life, but if I try to imagine life without going to college, I just stop dead in my tracks. Just the thought of not graduating from college is scary.

desteffy: I haven't taken any time off so far because I'm trying not to fall behind. I was considered "smart" in high school and I hate feeling like I'm not even college material now. I know people who have been here at this community college for even 4 years. My major is "Engineering Science" which leads to a bachelor's degree in any engineering. My only career goal is to find something that I enjoy doing would let me provide for my future family and for my parents.

troytime: What is your career that you love now?

benchiu: I've been seeing various professionals over the last couple of months. Most recently is a psychiatrist who's been really helpful so far. I can't help feeling like a loser though because I even have to go to see her.

S Freud: Thanks for the encouragement.

NoShangriLa: Traveling is something that I've been considering. My family is from Pakistan and I've been there several times so I have an idea of how "the other half" lives. I was thinking about going there to spend some time with the family but I don't know if that would help with this problem.

udonoogen: I paid for my tuition and books this semester with money I made over the summer. I thought it would motivate me but it hasn't as much as I thought. For me, once the money is gone I don't miss it. In a sense it's just numbers on a computer screen.

I got kicked out, .75 gpa or something, made it 2 trimesters of the first year. Wasn't really going to class at all. Didn't own an alarm clock. I was basically there for the social atmosphere. Too much freedom at the wrong time can be dangerous.

You gotta try REALLY hard for 1 semester and absolutely demolish all your classes. After 1 trying semester everything becomes easier.

Similar story as those above however it only took me a semester, did poorly my first three semesters and took one off, worked a crap job in a liquor store and hated it so much that I went back to school and worked like crazy to finish, summer and winter sesssions straight through with regular classes, I found I did alot better in the off season classes as they were smaller and more focused.
