I tried to get online last night but my roommate was connected so it wouldn't let me. It's been working for 5 months without any problems.

I also heard that Comcast was buying out ATTBI. Rumor or Fact?

Are you using a router? If so, it probably uses NAT so a static IP shouldn't change anything.

American Telegraph and Telephone Broadband Internet

that's what it stands for

No, ATTBI did NOT go to static IP's. We've got a national crisis on our hands that started on the east coast yesterday and moved entirely west today. If you have any ATTBI questions, ask away. I'm a Tier2 tech.

btw nik, any info on the 256Kbps upload speeds? dslreports attbi forums have talked about certain areas being tested for 256Kbps uploads.. wonder if you heard of anything.. thanks

ah! I was also having trouble with my connection last night. Everytime I visit a site it would tell my that another computer is online (my roommate's) and whether I want to replace his connection or not. The weird thing is that we've signed up for 2 ips addresses and it's been working for the past 3 months.

Current configuration -
pc1 and pc2 connected to a switch then connection to modem. My roommate has not issues with his connection, it's on my side.

nik, any suggestions? oh btw, I;m in the nor cal area, mtn. view to be exact.

I have a question...

How much of a pain will it be for me to get my own modem installed?

Do I need a service call or can the configuration be done by tech-support?

hmm. i know they used to have those @home starter kits you could buy at CompUsa, not sure what the deal is now with ATTBI/Comcast or other cable companies for that matter..

alittle different, and i personally havent done it, but my friend got dsl.. which pacbell mailed out the modem/necessary equipment and from what i understand, it was a pretty easy setup.. just follow the directions kind of thing. id think the same would go for a cable self-install..

E. Amish - do you mean dialup or broadband?
Usually broadband pricing includes a modem & cables but not an ethernet card (to which it connects to in your box). Also, a configuration CD comes with the modem. Run the CD and basically you're up and running. However, you will need to configure existing apps like e-mail and newsreaders. But the CD should have instructions on how to do that.

still no info from ffmcobalt?

I already have AT&T broadband service, but I'm currently leasing the modem for $10/mo. I want to buy my own modem and send their's back to them. I've heard some people have had a nitemare trying to get this done. I've heard that the new modem can be configured by the service tech over the wire and that AT&T will try and force a costly service call for no reason. I'm just trying to get to the bottom of the hearsay.

What I want to know is when they are gonna uncap the whole system. A few miles from me the competition does 3MB down and .8 up. I used to get that with @home.

i dont know off hand, but if you check the attbi dslreport forums, there is a website (varies by region) that you connect to when you get the new modem to provision it so that it's put into attbi's database or something. this info might be old, but from what i understand, when you switch from leasing modem to purchased modem, they charge you $10 or $20.. dont remember to switch plans and there's no way around that.

and there's also word going around that they will be increasing prices alittle for people that dont also have other at&t services like cable or digital telephone service.. at least that's what ive read.

Okay, kiddies, here's the low-down. The registration servers in regions 1-4 went down today or last night some time (that's pretty much all of the U.S. that ATTBI serivces not including the northern MidWest and NewEngland). Region 6 went down yesterday. They are all up and running again, in case you're curious. If you know what region you're in, more power to you. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, don't worry about it. The registration servers are back up and running again. The only problems we're seeing now are being taken care of. If you don't have a connection, and you're in one of the five regions that went down, you obviously won't be able to connect when you go back home until you go through one of the two following steps (if you don't just feel like calling me anyway )

You'll need to do these when you're at home, in front of your computer. If you're at work, print out this post and take it with you for reference.

1) DNS ISSUE - in which case you'll need to get a ticket made for your account and have it assigned to the UberTechs above Tier2 known as Provisioning or TASC. They are the only group who has authority to work over the SAS (registration) servers and the only group who can fix it. You'll need a flag attached to your account in order for Provisioning to include your account in the fix, which comes in the form of a lovely call to tech support who will make a ticket for you after going through the standard trouble-shooting steps.

2) REGISTRATION ISSUE - in which case our servers have mixed up many accounts, exchanging MAC addresses on one account for MAC addresses on other accounts, randomly generating MAC addresses for some accounts, etc. In this case, the tech will see two computers in the registration quarry software that we use. Whether you use one computer or two or whatever, they'll see two. What you need to do is go to https://sas.rX.attbi.com where the "X" is the region number you're in. Below is a list of what region you're in, per state. I'm not going to publicly trouble shoot not being able to browse to this site. Just go to the site and click the "replace" button, if you have already registered, etc. Then, the next page will say something about restarting the computer or power cycling the modem. Here is where we change the rules... Shutdown the computer. Make sure it does NOT start up until I say (haha ). Unplug the power cord to the modem and leave it unplugged for about 30 seconds or so. Plug it in and make sure you get a sync with the network before starting the computer. Your modem lights should either be
-power lit, cable lit, pc link lit
-or-
-power lit, receive lit, send lit, online lit
We don't care about activity, email, etc. When those are solid green (not blinking), power on the PC.
If you know how, see if you can release/renew your IP address. It should start with 12 (i.e. 12.245.132.68 or 12.90.72.251 or something). Open IE and browse away.

If you need any more help, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Registration Regions

Region 1:
-
Oregon
-Washington

Region 2:
-California (not including Sacramento and the surrounding suburbs)

Region 3:
-Texas

Region 4:
-Montana
-Wyoming
-Colorado
-Utah

Region 6:
-Mass
-Connecticut
-Pennsylvania
-Ohio
-West Virginia

That will never happen.

UPDATE:

There are a few hotspots still left to fix, but most of the nation is corrected again. Odds are that most of you should be okay.

They seem to be testing it here, because I can upload at 32k/sec now... and have been able to for a couple weeks.

At first I thought maybe they were just being nice to me, because I got 2 months for free... for shitty service.. lol.. But my brother can upload at 32k/sec, too.
