did I blow my PSU?

I decided to install another hard drive in my server because I found a 500GB one for dirt cheap when I was in need of something on tigerdirect so figured, why not...
I plug it in, turn on the server, it shuts off, but the leds stay on. power and HDD as well as mobo light. So I unhook it, now its doing the same thing. Am I fucked? So much for my long weekend... I had plans, and I need that server to be up so I can code as all my dev stuff is on there.

So did I blow my power supply, or worse, motherboard? It's a 500 watt PSU, that was the 4th HDD in it at least till I transfer the data over then I would of removed the 300gig one.

Is/was the new HDD the type that uses a 4 pin Molex? If so, was the connection flipped in the power port? If yes, is the PSU a quality unit with short circuit protection? If no, the PSU might be done.
Aside from that, IDK.

Well turns out it was the PSU. I just did an emergency trip to go buy one, suprisingly was under 100 bucks, guess in town is not always bad. Its usually brutal to buy locally. I got another 500 watt and its running fine. The drive was an IDE with 4 pin molex, yes. I *think* what happened is I accidentally grabbed one of the 4 pin molex left overs from a custom fan circuitry so it only got the 12 volt part and not the 5, and it probably did not get the full 12, maybe like 10, as its hooked to a fan speed control device. So maybe that made the amps jump and it blew. Normally a blown power supply wont run period, so this really got me worried it was worse. I left all 3 original drives running with the new PSU before I install it to be extra sure it's that, but think I'm good.

I wont try plugging in another drive in there, just in case it was not the fan thing that caused it. I'm just throwing theorys around based on the wires lying about, I might of grabbed the wrong one. I'll be using my USB external enclosure for the data transfer.

Just glad everything is back up... nothing worse then starting a weekend with a dead server, when its the main production server of the house.

This turns out much worse

Now when I shut down the server, it just turns back on. WTF? New PSU. Also when I flip the PSU switch off, the motherboard LED starts flashing like insanity, like a burning out neon light. Is the motherboard fucked too? This cheap hard drive I ran into is turning into a thousand dollar nightmare..... and I work full time, I lack the time to build another server... what a mess.
