Hi. I have an 1800+ tbred B. I removed my fan to apply some of that artic silver 3. My fan removed, my knee would soon hit the power button of my comp. Thats right, my comp on with no HSF. It was on for maybe about 10-15 seconds at the most. I didn't smell anything burning or unusual. However, when I power up my comp, no bios once however. Did I fry my cpu? Thanks for all your replies

you should be fine. I did something similar. hooked up a new heatsink fan (volcano 9) but plugged it into a toggle siwtch in the off position. good thing I was watching when I started up and noticed the fan not spinning. shut it donw within about 15 seconds and there were no problems.

You should be fine
when a AMD XP CPU get to hot its just shut off the computer
you may want to reset you BIOS and see if that helps

well it depends, by "hsf" do you only mean teh FAN was not on, or the entire heatsink AND fan was not on?? (meaning it was just cpu in socket)

btw, why you didnt turn off psu while doing this?
you should have....lesson for next time..regardless of how this goes

leave it off for some time, then clear cmos, and try again

Clear bios by shorting pins or pulling battery....If no boot it may be dead...pull out chip and look for burn marks underneath the chip....

Also....lesson...Always turn off and unplug power supply from box when working inside the case....all sorts of hazards from electrical discharge to just what happened to you....

My friend, yes, you fried your XP 1800+. My 1800+ died also today. R.I.P. clmmods just changed the HSF and it didn't want to boot up after that, he didn't even turn it on without the HSF. These things must be ULTRA SUPER SENSITIVE to something.

15 seconds without a heatsink is probably enough to destroy an Athlon if your mobo does not have automatic shutdown via the on-chip diode. With a heatsink, but fan off, it might go 10 minutes or longer. In 15 seconds, heat probably could not get to anything else fast enough to cause a smell.

There is nothing super-sensitive about Athlons. I burnt the heat goo from a gooey white to hard dark gray with a poorly attached HS. I could smell solder melting. When I fixed the problem, the CPU booted normally and it is still running OCed after a couple of years.

May I suggest for future that ANYTIME you open your case, PLEASE remove the power cable or if your power supply has a switch TURN IT OFF. I fried my very first computer (packard bell 386~10 years ago) by pulling out the modem while it was running and I know I should not have been under that hood but you live and learn.

Thanx for all ur replies. And yes, my chip is dead, R.I.P. little 1800. I cleared the bios, I left it off for sometime, and everything else I tried didn't help any. That's okay, TIME FOR AN UPGRADE! Too bad my budget is very minimum right now. I'll give the 2100 tbred a try and overclock the h*ll out of that sucker. I heard they hit 2.0ghz (2400) like nothing. Again, thanx for all your replies.

Definitely fried. Even a few seconds will do in an XP, I know from experience. Maybe PhoenixofWater has his BIOS set to shut down with temps over 70C or so. Wish I had done that.
