Did I have a panic attack?

Something very strange happened to me a few nights ago. I would appreciate it if you guys could offer your thoughts as to what it was, because I have no idea.

I had been at a party in the evening - eating, dancing, drinking (probably had 6 or so drinks in 3 hours). My girlfriend and I went back to her place after the party. She had brought some rum to the party and there was about 2 shots worth left, so we decided to just finish it before we went to bed. She mixed my shot with about 12 oz of Dr. Pepper. I drank half of that and started to feel weird, so I dumped the rest. I proceeded to go upstairs and take my contacts out, which is when I started to not feel well at all. Most prominently was a stabbing pain in my lower left side and the feeling like someone had kicked my left nut. I laid down to rest, and that's when the weird part started.

First my teeth began to chatter. My jaw had never moved so fast before. It was ridiculous chattering and I'm surprised my teeth made it out okay. Her roommates heard it from downstairs. I was breathing pretty heavily after a minute or so of this. I don't remember if I was shivering/shaking at all. I do remember that I did not feel cold at all. My girlfriend's first reaction was to throw blankets over me, but I was not cold and she confirmed that I did not feel clammy. My mental state during this episode could best be described as off and on. At most points I was fully cognizant and talking, but at others I remember rolling my eyes back and losing sense of things. I moaned about the pain in my side/nut a lot, but I don't know if that was related to this at all (I could have just sat on it wrong or something).

The strangest part of all of this is that I stopped it by thinking about other things. As I distracted myself the chattering slowed down and I felt better. Eventually I concentrated on the TV and I returned to normal. This whole episode lasted about 10 minutes.

Have you guys ever heard of such a thing happening? I tried looking it up online, and came up with a panic attack because it seemed to me that this was all mental (aside from the pain in my gut). If this was a physical reaction to something I had ingested I don't think I would have been able to stop it by thinking about stuff other than what was happening to me.

Again, I appreciate your thoughts.

Cliffs:
1) came home from party
2) pain in my gut
3) Teeth chattering uncontrollably along with heavy breathing for 10 minutes or so
4)Went away when I distracted myself.
5) What happened?

Are you sure something didn't happen to your earlier that night that you forgot due to the alcohol?

I am sure nothing obviously bad happened to me earlier. Two drinks an hour on a full stomach would not have impaired my memory.

what did the 6 drinks you had prior consist of? did you know all the people at the party, and did you leave you drink unattended at any point during the night?

It sounds like a seizure kind of..

Also, that pain may be your pancreas - a part of your body that is affected quite a bit by heavy drinking. If that's the case, you NEED to talk to a doctor because your pancreas can be hurt just as much if you stop drinking cold turkey or if you keep drinking..

Either that, or you just flat out drank too much (you did drink a lot) and you passed out and had a night of being sick and you hardly remember any of it..

I agree, it does sound like a seizure.

Panic attacks usually don't cause pain there, but in the upper chest, fast breathing, usually leading to you feeling like you might pass out. fast heart rate, sweating.

I was drinking beer, rum and cokes, and gin and tonics. All were served by a professional bartender at a hotel. I knew very few people at the party, and yes I left my drinks unattended.

Yea, whatever this was is sort of similar to a seizure, but my girlfriend is a student-nurse and I had to do a big presentation on seizures back in high school. We both agree it was not a seizure because A) I wasn't convulsing, just shaking a bit, B) I was talking during parts of it, C) I was able to stop it myself.

I will look into this pancreas thing, thank you for this suggestion.

I assure you that your last proposal is incorrect.

It sounds to me like you have a really good girlfriend. The fourth or fifth orgasm in a night can cause such lower stomach pain. She may be too much for you to handle.

Regarding leaving a drink unattended, I never return to a drink if I leave it unattended. This is mostly due to a fear of some smoker dumping their ashes in my drink. If the glass leaves my hand then I am done with the drink.

sounds to me like a caffeine attack- I started having them around 10 years ago, and have to watch my caffeine intake, now. First time it happened to me, I had just gone to bed, and my legs started violently shaking by themselves.

actually I almost sorta agree, too much caffeine will do that sort of stuff for me, but one Dr. Pepper don't sound like it could be the case, maybe the interaction with the alcohol though. You aren't supported to mix stimulants and depressants together like that (but that should affect your heart, I thought not you teeth or lower abdomen).

Just a bit of misinformation there on you and your gfs part. A, you don't have to be convulsing to have a seizure. B, you can be fully awake and talking during a seizure. Not saying you had a seizure, but if it was, possibly simple partial seizure is the only thing I could really fit it under. The presentations for those are really varied. Are you on any meds at all? Oh and C, ever think that by the time you thought about something it could have ended already? Possible coincidence. Unless it happened again and you did the same thing I really wouldn't trust that.

You could very well be right about it being a partial-seizure. I've only ever seen one seizure, and my girlfriend has seen several, but I suppose we've never seen partial seizures (I didn't know such a thing existed).

Normally I'd agree with you about C, however I got worse again when I stopped trying to distract myself. It was only when I got worse after this did I think that perhaps that thinking about other things had actually helped me. Then I tried again and got better again. Of course, you could be right and maybe this episode had natural peaks and valleys, and it was during the latter that I was able to think about other things.

Interesting proposition. The Dr. Pepper was not the only caffeinated beverage I drank that night. I had been drinking rum and coke almost the entire night. I don't usually drink soda or coffee or anything with caffeine.
