Did I install my heatsink/fan wrong?

Take it off, clean it(hsf and cpu. get them as clean as you can) and re-install it. See if that helps.

also check to see if the mounting surface is warped or rough.

What case are you using? And how are you checking the temps?

My idle is at about 31* through asus pc probe and ai booster. I use a zalman 9500 on my 6600 and its great.

Well, I'm just using the Abit Guru software or whatever to read them (in an Abit AB9 Pro)...

As for Case, it's been in an open case w/a huge fan blowing on it for testing, since I wanted to make sure it wasn't an ambient issue. The heat sink hardly even feels warm...

Do you have the fan blowing down or sucking up from the fins on the HS?

If your temps are reaching 60C then your heatsink should feel warm if it has proper contact to the cpu. I also recommend removing the heatsink and re-installing it to make sure it's installed correctly.

I'm not sure about your heatsink/fan, but on mine i can simply remove the fan and nothing else.

Your fan should be blowing down towards the CPU, try reversing that and it should help.

Yeah, it does feel warm if the temp gets up towards 60C, I've not seen it go over like 56C so far.

I'll reinstall it again, which is always so much fun. Yeah I can remove the fan, I'll unscrew it and screw it on the other way to blow the air down then.

Will know how it all goes tonight! Thanks for the info.

Also curious what program you are using to read temps? CoreTemp is supposed to be most accurate but it tends to read higher than mobo bios temps and speedfan temps.

I'm not a huge fan of doing stuff like that. lol. I swear the -stock- HSF fan on it idled the thing at 35C, so I obviously did something wrong when I applied AS5 and then put the NT06 on it...

Skott, I'll try CoreTemp tonight.

It's the HSF. If you're getting high temp from the BIOS or mobo software readout, you're gonna get ridiculously temp w/ CoreTemp.

Is there any reason you bought a $60 HSF that's not made by Thermalright, Scythe, or Zalman? I didn't even know Silverstone makes HSFs. Are you using the Silverstone NT06 in a SFF?

Heh! Sorry for being so enigmatic...

I'm NOT suggesting that you do an IHS removal on your E6600!

I was trying, in a crafty way, to show you that MANY C2D CPUs are coming out of the fabs with concave IHSs. That's probably what's causing your high temps.

We just built two identical E6600 machines, and one was 20º C hotter than the other -- couldn't figure it out -- but after doing some research, I discovered that others were having the same problem!

Gotta run. BBL

So, is CoreTemp correct?

It shows 33 or 34C, while the Abit Guru thing shows 47C! Regardless, re-applying the paste and all made the Abit program drop from 49C or so to 47. LOL.

Look like Abit temp reporting's busted. I would trust CoreTemp over it.
