Did I make a bad decision in getting the 9800GTX over one of the 8800 series cards?...

I just read a few topics over at the HardOCP forums talking about how the 9800GTX series actually under performs compared to the 8800GT/GTS series...


Is this true?


I got the 9800GTX thinking "what the heck, i'll spend the extra 80 bucks and get a little bit better performance out of it..."


Do you guys think i made a bad choice in not going for something like the EVGA 8800GTS over the 9800? I'm so worried now that i didn't spend my money wisely...:frown:


I really want to be able to max out the settings in all the current games and the games on the horizon like Assassin's Creed, Crysis, Bioshock, UT3, Etc...

I don't see how it would underperform the other cards - it's essentially an 8800GTS with faster clocks. They may have been speaking from a price/performance standpoint.

I know the forum is already flooded with debates and complaints about the 9800 cards shaping up to be pretty bad. But I have a question...

The 8800 GTX and Ultra are significantly better setup to handle higher resolutions, outperforming the 9800GTX in both raw pixel output (ROP x core clock) and Memory throughput (bus width / 8 X mem speed).

These are just a few copys of what's being said.

First you mentioned 8800gt/gts and DSF was right, but now you mention 8800gtx/ultra which are totally different gpu's.
Yes they are better than the 8800gt/gts/9800gtx but they're being phased out since its an older design and more power hungry.

The 8800GTX has more mem bandwidth, and might perform better if you crank up the AA.

But you made the right choice, because the only reasonably priced 8800GTXs aren't the brand you want. You bought EVGA and you're going to step up in 3 weeks. If you don't, please slap yourself for us. But it won't come to that...right?

The Zotac 8800GTX card for $209 was the only other logical choice, but the 9800GTX is a very worthwhile card, especially given the fact that you can Step Up to the next gen cards for around $150 in three months. I am actually interested in seeing what the ATI 4870 does, as for the price it looks like a really nice option. Mind you, I am not dumping my Nvidia 9800 GTX plans at this point, but I like the fact that ATI will be offering a competitive card for a VERY competitive price.

8800GTX also has 768MB of RAM.
