Did I mess up??

The motherboard is socket A, so I decided to purchase: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813186029

Turns out, the motherboard is a socket 754. Can socket A both be 754 and 462?

Sorry, the HP motherboard is a socket 754. I just read their website and it said socket A, so I went to newegg, and looked under socket A motherboards, and purchased one.

Well if the mobo is socket 754 then "you" did mess up. However, I would place more of the blame on hp.

But you never answered my question...HOW did you find out it is 754?

After the new motherboard arrived, I took out the old one, removed the cpu, and and noticed the HP board had socket 754 printed on it.

I called Newegg, and they told me to go ahead and order the correct motherboard from them, send the socket A back, and they will waive the restocking fee

an athlon xp is skt a
400mhz is usually considered with skt a older ranged athlons such as 3000 3200's
