i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz
these were my temps before i overclocked after playing bf3, with a ZALMAN CNPS9500 heatsink.

so i used easy tune 6 to oc to 3.45ghz
and im noticing a very nice up in performance in bf3. not much greater fps but i can definitely see a difference.

Unfortunately my cpu temps rose quiet a bit.

i have two top fans, usually both on exhaust
i switched one to intake which brought the cpu temps down quiet a bit but brought my gpu temp up 2C-3C, which i guess is better than having a cpu bordering 70C.

now these temps are a little higher then id like them, did i do something wrong or do i need a new heatsink?

They do run hot... Maybe you should try disabling HT and bumping your clocks up to 4GHz. I bet you'll be happier with the performance. If so you should consider selling to trade for a 2500k system. The i7-9xx stuff is not the best platform for gaming performance per dollar.

i dont want to clock to 4ghz untill i get a new heatsink

That's just it, with HT disabled you may be able to run cooler and faster and get better gaming framerates. Might be able to lower the voltage too.

I know with the i7 2600K that the safe upper limit is high 60s and below 72 (documented limit). With my Cooler master 212 EVO I can go 4.7ghz and be right on the edge of that. If you really want to be sure I would double check your heatsink and thermal paste install.

Interesting tip on disabling the HT for the OP. I need to try that too. Thanks.

Why tell him to turn off HT. If he uses the proper 64 bit HT app, then he needs it .

Do you use Sonar X1 ?

Do you use Adobe Premiere and Adobe Photoshop ?

Do you use Sony Vegas ?

If you answered no to all questions, then turn off HT if you want.

im pretty positive my heatsink is on properly
the artic silver 5 im using is very old though, has been in the refrigerator for years...
could be the issue?

tweak, i do use adobe ps, flash, illustrator and dreamweaver
as you stated, turning off ht has made performance worse but my temps much better.

EDIT: I decided to clock down to 3.22ghz and turn HT back on, untill i can figure out this heat issue
in bios its reading my cpu clock at 3.22ghz but in control panel/system/ its says 950 @ 3.07GHz 3.06GHz

so is it at 3.22ghz or 3.06ghz?

That Q. is hard to answer. Did up update or flash your BIOS to the latest ver.? And what MB are you using?

Did i overclock correctly?

Did performance go up?

Is it still stable?

If you answered "yes" to the above, then I don't see how it was overclocked incorrectly.

70C isn't going to hurt that processor. You're going to replace it long before the temp delta is going to make a difference.

@zap, yes performance went up and besides my temps everything seems stable.

I have been running my i5-750 at 3.8GHz for a couple weeks. My core temps will hit 90C (according to HwMonitor) when I fully load it. But when playing games and doing "normal stuff", it only reaches 72C or so. Even at 90C it runs just fine. I cannot detect any throttling at all, at least not according to my superpi results. I had it as high at 97C without any issue. The base of the heatpipes on my cooler feel only slightly warm. I really question the amount of heat this thing is supposedly putting out. It idles at 40C and runs at about 52C when running superpi 32M so I think the sensor is probably working ok.
