Did I overclock the CPU or not?

So my friend got a Fatal1ty X370 Gaming X motherboard with a Ryzen 7 1700 CPU and 2x8GB RAM kit with DDR4 3000 XMP speed support. I don't remember 100% the actual model, I think it was this one: http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/vengea...z-c15-memory-kit-blue-led-cmu16gx4m2c3000c15b

I got into UEFI (latest version) and it seems like this RAM kit doesn't support any JEDEC speed other than 2133. I activated the XMP profile and set it to auto. After the reboot, the automatic XMP setting again chose the speed of 2133.

I manually set it to the 2400 XMP profile and after the reboot I remember the memory voltage went up to 1.25 V. What I don't know is if I overclocked the CPU. Did I? What if I set it to 2666?

I don't really know what's going on, the official maximum support of Ryzen 7 1700 is 2666, as is the motherboard's non-OC maximum speed but there is the Single Rank/Dual Rank nonsense as well so who knows. Also, does this memory support situation change with the UEFI updates or is it set in stone?

Thanks.

You need to download apps like CPU-Z and Hardware Monitor and read up on basic overclocking. Visiting sites that specialize in overclocking like overclocking.net or overclockers.com would be a good idea. Then visit the AMD sub forums. To answer your question changing the frequency of the memory does not overclock the cpu.

Thanks for the info, it's true I don't know anything about overclocking. What I have heard though is that if you're running the CPU memory controller out of spec you are actually overclocking the CPU.

That is only the case if you are changing the BCLK and not the memory frequency itself. To overclock an unlocked cpu you generally just change the multiplier of the cpu itself.

Asrock mobo should come with some sort of tuning utility... set it to performance mode and it will automatically OCs. If you did not do that or play around with the CPU settings in bios then you most definitely did not OC the CPU. As chrisjames61 suggested, download some sort of monitoring utility. I use open hardware monitor, it displayed a widget on the desktop, you can see the clock speed in real time...

Some more questions for you guys. I just realized that those extra volts that the motherboard applied on the DRAM are actually overvolting the integrated memory controller of the CPU. Since this guy plans to keep the rig for 10 years I worry about degradation of the CPU. So how do I avoid that without having shitty 2133 throughput?

This memory kit seems fast, I wonder if I could manually set it to DDR4-2666 at 1.2V with slow JEDEC timings like 19-19-19 or 20-20-20? Do you think that's feasible? What should I run for stability testing, intel burn test, prime95?

Thanks
