I have been trying so many distros it isnt even funny. I tried the original ubuntu, fedora all the way up to 6, debian, hell i even gave gentoo a go. The only interface i liked was ubuntu, but i couldnt get all of my stuff working. Now, that i am back to using the new edgy, she screams, has tons of repos, and also just works. I had an issue before configuring it to see ntfs, and i just did a quick search and found exactly how to set it up. It was done in like 2 minutes. The wireless internet, works, and is quite fast. I get updates every day, all of my programs just work with it. I can ftp, use it for email, and i can even play a few games on it. Did i say i love edgy?

Can I say I love Edgy Eft too ?
Forget Vista,
Forget SUSE.

Ubuntu and Debian is the REAL future. Free, non patented stuff to bother us. They are the better out of the Box Linux Distro in the world !

Nero is a Shame compared to K3B...

what do you mean by "watered down?" To plain looking? Not enough features? Not enough software?

Yea, really what is watered down supposed to mean? I'm not a fan of full desktops, but IMO there's too much stuff going on.

I agree, give me FreeBSD or Debian as is over Ubuntu any day. I'm forced to run Fedora at work and it sucks. yum is nice and all, but ports system and apt-get beat it any day.

It's not even that, I don't mind having the Gnome stuff installed and I usually do because I prefer GTK applications, but I just don't want to use the full desktop. I'd have no problems running Ubuntu if they had an always current release like Debian sid.

heh. I am a bit like that also.

For my desktop I just use Gnome since I don't care. But for my laptop I get realy tired of the stupid trackpad, so I'll use Gnome until I get tired of the hassle, then I'll switch to ratpoison.

here is what I use in my ~/.xinitrc to keep gnome compatability high with all my settings and such when I use ratpoison.
gnome-settings-daemon &
gnome-volume-manager &
beagled &
/usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session ssh-agent /usr/bin/ratpoison

for a graphical file manager I'll still use nautilus, but I've recently just setup a alias to make it easier for myself.
alias nauty="nautilus --browser --no-desktop"

so that works pretty good.

i cant get my wife to like Ubuntu... well, any linux. she wants photoshop. and theres not a linux port... grumble grumble adobe grumble.

other than that, ubuntu is great. i did a dual boot install on my laptop, and xp pro (for the wife) didnt recognize my ethernet, wifi, soundcard, or modem. ubuntu got them all. amazing.

if you dont play games on your computer, ubuntu is good, and free.

I loaded both the Ubuntu 6.10 Desktop and the Server versions on a brand new E6300 on a new Gigabyte GA-945P-S3. Unfortunately, the Server version couldn't detect the onboard NIC, but the Desktop version automatically loaded the proper NIC drivers. The Desktop version seemed quite useable.

So it's not that she dislikes Ubuntu, it's just that the apps she needs doesn't have a native port?

There's no linux port, but there are other programs too. What about Xara Xtreme?

Xara Xtreme is vector-based image creation tool. It's not equivelent to Photoshop, which is raster image editing tool.

Depending what she does Gimp or Krita will be closest. When GEGL gets finished and integrated into Gimp it should be quickly be on par with Photoshop technology-wise. (Gegl development has picked up considurably as of late)

Otherwise the other options are a propriatory application called 'Pixel', getting Photoshop running in Linux using wine, or running photoshop on Windows in a VM.

Photoshop CS:2 won't wok in wine.

Photoshop is fine and dandy for the pros, but IMHO is too expensive for the small edits that most home users are going to make. Isn't Picasa ported over now? Otherwise, I usually just gimp stuff to kill off redeye or stamp out background problems. ImageMagick is my image editing app of choice, since I normally just resize photos for web/email.

I do not understand running Ubuntu as a server product. Debian Stable is (IMNSHO) a very superior distro for servers, where you need uptime and stability. It's all I will run anymore.

I forgot to mention Gimp..
For a person who bought an simpler Manual, Gimp is faster and better than photoshop.
In relation Ubuntu /Debian the two are invincible, simply the best distros in the world.

Picasa was a WINE port :/

Well the Ubuntu LTS release will be on par with Debian stable, it'll be supported for several years and will only receive security updates. But I don't really see the point of choosing Ubuntu over Debian in that regard unless you just like the Ubuntu brand-name better.

I like Ubuntu, but I installed the KDE/ kubuntu desktop out of curiosity, and after some experimentation I have concluded that at this point the KDE deskop is vastly superior to the Gnome desktop. Vital options have been eliminated from Gnome in the name of simplicity.
