Did my cpu die, HELP!

Hey all.

So for the longest time my motherboard did not correctly report temperatures. After I reset the CMOS it randomly started working again some time ago. It was reporting very poor temperatures (50 idle 70 load), so I went a reseated the cooler. Now when I turn on the computer neither the graphics card nor the CPU fan start spinning up and I do not get an image on the screen. The motherboard power light is green, the hard drive is spinning and the rest of the case fans come on. I tried resetting the CMOS and that did nothing.

This computer has been running fine for years until now.

One note, my mobo for some reason wont boot if I have any other case fans plugged into the fan controllers on the mobo, it wasnt booting at all at first and I removed one of the fan plugs and it started. I then tried to put the fan back on and it made the whole thing shut off. I dont know if that has anything to do with it. It booted again after I removed the fan but now im at the problem listed above.

i believe it is your motherboard because something similar happened to me too. When i replaced the mobo everything worked fine.

You may have seated the heatsink incorrectly, and the processor is overheating very quickly and shutting down to prevent damage.

I'd try reseating it with (less) thermal paste.

I would vote for this two....I have had many motherboards die, hardly ever a cpu (recently)

As for reseating it again, I reseated it and there seemed to be just the normal amount of paste, I used a spreading stick thingey that came with my paste.

I bet it is the motherboard, thanks for the help. I know its got a 3 year warranty but that might be up already...

You can always buy a motherboard from Newegg or a local retailer with 30 days no questiones asked refund policy to see if that solves the problem. At worst you lose the shipping when you return the board.

What are you running for a power supply?

Do you have a digital multimeter handy?

For a frame of reference, I was using a 6000+ windsor before oc'd to 3.1 with 2x 8800 gts 320s w/ 4gb ddr2800 with no apparent issues. I am currently running 1 GTX 260 with that Phenom II 940 @ stock, same 4 gigs. I have added a sound card and a vertex ssd.

I suspected the power supply to some degree, but I do not have a multimeter to test anything.

EDIT: if the need is great enough I can get a multimeter, but its a 2 hour drive away

Well instead of replacing it I upgraded it once a year (the anniversary upgrade I call it) to keep it recent. I figure a Phenom II 940 and a GTX 260 should be more than enough to play the games I wanna play @ 1680x1050

You have done nothing to cause this problem. Im thinking the mobo is flippin out or something.. I doubt its the CPU its something else causing this. gl
