The reason your payout is so much higher is you got ripped off. I really didn't so much, but it's a class action suit. I was thinking I'd end up with a check for $0.01 or something. I have gotten a few of those.

Because so many are selling retail priced stones. If you buy at wholesale pricing/close to it you can resell for the same price (minus setting and stuff).

A diamond is a commodity. Also, most diamonds sold are previously owned to begin with.

If you're talking about carat weight then I would tend to agree with you. They are typically the most flawed.

I worked for the instrument manufacturing division of the GIA for many years and we had a diamond that was just under 2 carats we used to use for calibration that was flawless and it was valued at around $10k... just for the stone (and that was 10+ years ago so it was probably undervalued even then-it's a very conservative company).

That was kind of a fun place to work actually and working there was what brought me to San Diego.
