Not once, ever.

However looking back on it now I can see the damage being so passive caused and have seen the dark places people get lost in sometimes.

what i learned is better to avoid or be a chicken== not worth it. I had my share of being a tough guy and still wondering what I gained. I have family members who avoided it and was humiliated in the process. Now they are all successful and laughing at the bullys.

Best self defence is kick boxing or boxing.

The kenpo master I studied under said that when trouble comes to you, walk away if you can...run away if you must, but when you have no choice but to defend yourself, ideally, you should hit the attacker 5 times. 2 times to knock them off their feet, once as they're on the way to the ground, and twice more to keep them from getting back up. Never worry about fighting "fair," fight to end the threat.

Ed Parker or Chinese Kenpo? I made it to ichi kyu in Chinese Kenpo, but the chin na was to LARP. Judo and wrestling brought much more to the table at the time. BJJ and catch wrestling even more so in this century, in my own experience. Combat submission wrestling is my favorite, out of what I have trained. No school like the old school.

Ed Parker...however, what we were actually taught wasn't just "pure" kenpo. He taught a blend of kenpo, judo, (primarily for throws and blocks) different styles/disciplines of karate, along with a bit of boxing and a bastardized version of muay thai. We didn't train to compete, we trained to survive. After 2 years, I enlisted and went to Vietnam where, on a couple of occasions, my"advanced hand-to-hand combat" skills served me very well...

I forgot to mention wrestling is crucial. My skinny nephew vs african big kid was playing around. My nephew just started bjj and applied it to african big kid. He submitted. 120 vs. 220lbs.

When mma back then in the late 90's was raw, wrestlling with some boxing dominated the sports then bjj with kickboxing kind of improve it. I wonder what happened to the white wrestling guy who kept winning the fights? He learned boxing but was a wrester all his life. Not wwf but real wrestling. I remember you can punch him all you want but once he took you down it was all over and he will. He always went after the legs. To this day I still have his fights in my vhs tape.

My question always is if bruce lee would survive today? I believe 90% that he would not.

He did not compete. so who knows if he would have survived back then? Lots of fishing stories about him, but that is far from anything useful. Muhammed Ali we can evaluate because he fought, we saw it, there is plenty of video; Lee not so much. Have to give him credit for all he did for the martial arts, and respect that contribution. But as a fighter, he did nothing to earn that respect. Show us your chin, show us your heart, show us your will to win. Skill is only one component of fighting. And while a cult sprung up around him, my response is meh.

Maybe a few close calls but none that I can remember being all that significant. I was always one of the smaller guys so I tried to stay away from any kind of physical altercation knowing I probably would not stand a chance. In general people did leave me alone anyway, it was only elementary that was kind of bad. When I got to high school I was actually one of the more popular guys, go figure.

I have been in many fights. Most were quick. Some were nasty. I lost some and won many.

I don't want to fight anyone but I won't back down when cornered.

The last one I got into in school was on the last day of exams in grade 12. A guy started it in the cafeteria and I turned it into a royal rumble. After I took out him out his 3 friends tried to jump me from behind and I tossed them around like rag-dolls. I worked out a lot back then and was very strong. I was also 6'1" and 230lbs.

After that I avoided fighting. I don't like getting hurt.

Last week I got into a fight after someone stole something from me. I held him long enough for the police to arrest him.

A few days ago someone tried to steal my cell phone as I was walking home from work. I was in no mood for that and after throwing him into a snow bank he ran away like the coward he was.

I am getting too old for this.
