The kenpo master I studied under said that when trouble comes to you, walk away if you can...run away if you must, but when you have no choice but to defend yourself, ideally, you should hit the attacker 5 times. 2 times to knock them off their feet, once as they're on the way to the ground, and twice more to keep them from getting back up. Never worry about fighting "fair," fight to end the threat.what i learned is better to avoid or be a chicken== not worth it. I had my share of being a tough guy and still wondering what I gained. I have family members who avoided it and was humiliated in the process. Now they are all successful and laughing at the bullys.
Best self defence is kick boxing or boxing.
Ed Parker or Chinese Kenpo? I made it to ichi kyu in Chinese Kenpo, but the chin na was to LARP. Judo and wrestling brought much more to the table at the time. BJJ and catch wrestling even more so in this century, in my own experience. Combat submission wrestling is my favorite, out of what I have trained. No school like the old school. You are not going to start singing/chanting Kumite now are ya?We didn't train to compete, we trained to survive.
He did not compete. so who knows if he would have survived back then? Lots of fishing stories about him, but that is far from anything useful. Muhammed Ali we can evaluate because he fought, we saw it, there is plenty of video; Lee not so much. Have to give him credit for all he did for the martial arts, and respect that contribution. But as a fighter, he did nothing to earn that respect. Show us your chin, show us your heart, show us your will to win. Skill is only one component of fighting. And while a cult sprung up around him, my response is meh.My question always is if bruce lee would survive today? I believe 90% that he would not.
