its hard to find a good dentist. i think i had a bad one before and now i am having a hard time finding a good one i can trust. i am in the military and have dental insurance but sometimes feel these dentist are just padding the bill with extras. look i know everyone needs a job. but i went to dentist today. did my cleaning and went through some xrays. then they propose a dental plan that will cost about 2800. so that is 3 fillings and 2 crowns. I mean i am not sure if i need a crown.

also, if i go to another dentist to seek another opinion. wouldnt they want to xray me all over again. good grief, i hate getting services i have no idea about.

does anyone know any good dental sites. probably dumb questions. does anyone else feel the same way.

Actually it is possible if your family is genetically predisposed to having week dentin and weak tooth surfaces. Also it's not surprising because all the kids might be exposed to the same types of foods to cause the tooth decay. I would ask how your dental hygiene was when you were a kid?

Having spent my childhood with military dentists, I recommend against them.

Yeh, they usually want to extract everything, but my Aunt goes to a periodontist on base and he's a good guy.

I have had dentists tell me that I have a cavity, but I feel no pain or discomfort, dispite extreme temperatures (gulp coffee over the tooth or bite into some ice cream). Even when he jabs it with teh pokey device. Yet I still get the filling. No no, no need for an x-ray. I trust you.

I got four fillings with no anesthetic at the age of eight, which has led to a lifelong aversion to dentists
It was pretty terrifying.

cavities don't cause pain...unless you have scumbag rotten teeth, then the pain is probably from something else

You can tell when a dentist or a dental hygenist finds a cavity with the sharp tool they use to poke your teeth, it will literally stick in a cavity and you can feel it sticking!

well, in their defense, a small cavity most likely won't cause you noticeable pain. not until it gets larger and into the dentin or into the nerve inside the tooth will you feel it.

and a cavity can be detected with an instrument called an Explorer ("teh pokey device"). you use xrays to detect cavities interproximally (in between) where you can't see or get an Explorer into. so you don't need an xray to detect every cavity.

recommendations from friends/co-workers or people whose opinion you value. afaik that's the only way.

Every time.

I hate going to them more than any other form of "doctor" if you even want to call them a damn doctor.

The one I went to in Burlingame was great. One stop shop.

The one my insurance sent me to here in Sacramento is the pits. EVERYONE working there looks like they just came out of High School. Ignored me in the waiting room for over an hour. I got the xray and the referral to the endodontist and I've never been back. I'm saving my money to go to the out of plan dentist across the street.

BTW, UnitedHEALTHcare Dental plan sux mutant equine penis.

I went to one new dentist that told me I needed 6 fillings. I had gotten 2 fillings in the other 20 or so years of my life so I didn't really believe him. I decided to go to another dentist. I ended up needing 1 filling and that dentist told me he had no idea how he could have come up with even 2 or 3 let alone 6 fillings.

I felt ripped off when I went to the endotontist. The endo had the nicest dental office I've seen. $800-1000 for a root canal (30-40 minutes of work). I was uninsured at that time too! My regular dentist even jokes about how endos are making the big $.
