Sales can be incredibly lucrative if you're a good closer, have the right attitude, and work in the right location. It can also be pure hell, too.

Most car sales people, just passing thru until they get a real job, don't make money. The ones who have been committed to it, and stay somewhere a few years, usually do quite well, assuming they have what it takes to begin with.

I have been a Finance Manager for almost 20 years combined, with a brief hiatus, of being in the computer business. Never made less than 6 figures a year, except when I was in the computer business. I don't work that many hours at my present job. 50 is about the average hours per week. I can live with that.

That's not bad, considering I have no formal education. I actually went back to school to get a H.S. diploma at night school, 4 years after I dropped out.

At age 19 and married, having been layed off at a factory, I knew no hourly job was going to support my family, so I chose sales.

I'm a commissioned salesman for Best Buy (Futureshop in Canada) and I make a killing for someone with no sales experience. I did about $4500 in December and $3500 in January working 30 hours a week.

Not HUGE...but I'm 18, and have no sales experience other than the last two months.

You gotta remeber thats the holiday season and that will be your biggest sales time all year its not hard to sell people things they want around the holidays please let me know what your number are in like july

slowest time is January/Feb. Look at his Jan figure.

canadian dollars, though. means he made about $50 total

I'm a white guy, and a minority where I work, so they must be fleeciing their own races then.

Yeah, of course. But there's a lot of pressure to sell too, and if you don't meet quota often, you're gone.

A decent painter in a production body shop like a dealership makes well over 100K plus you get high and don't have to lie.

Actually any saleperson, even in corporate stores make a lot of money. They can make 6 figure salaries easy, but only if they are really good at what they do.

"The Pareto principle serves as a baseline for ABC-analysis and XYZ-analysis, widely used in logistics and procurement for the purpose of optimizing stock of goods, as well as costs of keeping and replenishing that stock."

I guess this explains why stores are always out of the good stuff, they stock their shelves based on BS principles..

worng. a good salesperson works hard. Sales is the best paying job in the world if you work hard at it. Too many goldbrickers in sales with "potential"

which creates the weird situation where if something costs 10 dollars US or 10 dollars CAN, buying it from either source I will have to pay 11.50 CAN (one from conversion and one from tax)

I think it also helps that Infiniti is hot right now and has products that practically sell themselves.

I was at a Lexus dealership that's right next to a Chevy dealership recently.

You'd expect the Chevy dealership to be more busy since they sell more cars that more people can afford. There was only one other person in there besides myself.

Stepped into Lexus and there must've been a ratio of 2 customers to every salesman.

This is so true. To say that Americans have become obsessed with their cars is an understatement. I know people who would (and almost do) live in a cardboard box so they could drive a luxury car. It's insane.

Of all those customers in the Lexus dealership, I'd bet that 5% actually had any business being there.

And that's exactly why I quit. You can make the money, but you have to practically live there.

At the Ford dealership I worked at, which is the largest in the Southeast and one of the largest of any kind in the country, the top guys there in sales made over 200k.
But they were ALWAYS there.
Lots of guys approached 100k.
And lots more came and went and made peanuts.

Top guys sold 20+ cars per month, often near 30 on a regular basis. There's something about it...you either have it or you don't.

You don't have to be a sleaze, either....lots of sleazemasters make money, but just as many don't.
And there are lots of salesmen that treat their customers great and have tons of repeat business....which is how you make the big bucks.

I prefer to actually see my son and daughter grow up, so it's not for me, although I made around 40k in 9 1/2 months my first and only year.
