Only an incompetent salesperson has to lie.

I was raised lying is an ommision of facts to painting a rosier picture - In the salesmans case he does so to move product. All commision salesmen do it. Not to sound elitist but I have no pateince for it recognising sales is geared twards the middle, the waivering, and that's cool I just never deal with commision sales staff on thier terms, buying my cars auction wholesale - electronics and pretty much anything else that needs a salesperson to move it, wholesale.

The only thing I'm sleazy about is extended warranty. I get so much pressure from my boss because I'm not the best at pushing it. I don't really believe in it, so it is not easy to do.

I recently found out I lied about a lot of things, but its because the company intentionally keeps us in the dark. It is easier to tell BS if you don't know the truth!

they get vouchers for like $800-1000 for each car they sell

so if you guys really want to make it big... i suggest car sales!

I think it also helps that Infiniti is hot right now and has products that practically sell themselves.

I was at a Lexus dealership that's right next to a Chevy dealership recently.

You'd expect the Chevy dealership to be more busy since they sell more cars that more people can afford. There was only one other person in there besides myself.

Stepped into Lexus and there must've been a ratio of 2 customers to every salesman.

Infiniti sales are down.

The customer ratio at Lexus vs. Chevy doesn't surprise me but it is dependent on demographics and time of day.

my dad used to sell cars about 12 years ago, he could easily bring in 6 digits, but not anymore.

and he sold Chevy's

the worst thing to say to a car dealer is:

salesman: "How much you think that car you are trading in is worth"
buyer: "i dunno 7500?"
dealer: runs back to used car dudes they check it out etc, and they tell the salesman its worth 12 grand
salesman: "Well sir, we can offer you 8500 for the car"
buyer: "thats wonderful"
salesman: dumbass, i just made $3500 thanks to you.

I think I've only had one person that didn't think their car was worth 2k more than it was.

Also lowballing trade in value doesn't increase profit for the salesman in most cases only potential profit when the trade in is sold. Salesman usually don't get paid on both sides of the deal.

I spent a day at a dealership for work and the guy said that if his used salesmen don't each make 100k+ a year then they are doing something wrong.

I'll fill out a couple buyers orders and scan them later. In most cases you will only increase the amount financed by the customers. The profit stays the same. The reason you lowball a trade is to increase the profit margin on the trade when you sell it whether that be retail or to a wholesaler. The salesman is not normally paid on this side of the deal. At least not anywhere I have worked.

ive never had to negotiate, nor has my dad. weve always been GMS so its not that hard for us to buy a car. go in, look at the car, see a price automatically given to us, boom we are gone.

Don't know where you work, but that is called "boxing the trade" when the used car manager's appraisal is say, 9,000, and the salesman makes the deal while telling the customer they are giving him say, 8,000 for it.
That's 1k extra profit to the dealership, and I haven't seen a dealership around here that doesn't pay the salesman for that, too.

Nissan and Mitsu dealerships in SC. We were never paid for it.

Zebo's 9 steps to "surefire" success for salesmen.

1. learn to love to lie for the $
2. Your product whatever it is is the best product period in it's catagory.
3. Make the customer hear you out, i.e. don't tell price until you are done with presentation.
4. Make appeals/emphasis on luxurious or superior lifestyle your product will provide.
5. No pitfalls with whatever your product is
6. Claim to do lots of deals to the most succesful people
7. Gorgeous package(s) both you and your product.
8. Use "perfect offer" "painless" "win/win" "success" "trademark" and "patented" in every paragraph during presentation.
9. Cite professed religiousness as a selling point to religious buyers.

Biggest factor: New or Used.
Second: Brand
Third: Everything else

I'm a commissioned salesman for Best Buy (Futureshop in Canada) and I make a killing for someone with no sales experience. I did about $4500 in December and $3500 in January working 30 hours a week.

Not HUGE...but I'm 18, and have no sales experience other than the last two months.

Yeah but how much is that in REAL money.

Following most of those 9 steps would be a surefire way to a lack of success. You really shouldn't believe the blowhard losers when they pull #6 on you.

Keep in mind BTW that Edmunds sells a competiting service to car dealerships.

Really? Didn't happen to sell a large number of big screen TV's did ya? You are in the run up to the superbowl, Jan is a big month for TV's, in fact the biggest month of the year. As he said, wait till July when everyone is outside playing and not shopping and you won't be making anything.

I don't sell TVs.

I'm Canadian, we don't really give a sh!t about the Superbowl.

July is actually very busy.

Stop with the incorrect speculation...I know the average sales figures, and January is the slowest month.
