Most definitely their opponents were not legit.

Who would win in a match up (7 game series) of:

Redeem Team (2008 US Olympic Men's Basketball Team, Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Howard, Melo, etc.)

Dream Team (Bird, Magic, Ewing, Mullin, Pippen, Jordan, etc.)

?

Dream Team without a doubt.

Way better defense led by MJ, Pippen, Malone and Ewing. Better passing and higher shooting percentage led by Stockton, Mullin, & Magic.

I'm not sure what if anything the 2008 team could do better than the Dream team. Perhaps showboat.

Isiah Thomas should have been on it

PGs
Stockton and Johnson (I would take both over Thomas)

SGs
Jordan and Drexler

Thomas could have MAYBE replaced Drexler but he does not play SG. To bad Jordan said he would NOT join the team if Thomas was on it. That is what you get for being rude to the best player in basketball. It would not have been a dream team without Jordan but still could without Thomas.

SF
Bird, Pippen, Mullin

PF
Malone, Barkley, Laettner

C
Ewing, Robinson

11 Pros and 1 college person.

Basketball today = Wussy!!! No where near the defensive intensity of the 90's

the nba really peaked in the late 80's. nothing can top the celtics and lakers, that era in particular. in the mid 90's the league diluted with lesser talent and more franchises.

besides... he was just getting back from red lobster

(few if any will get this)

haha, I'm surprised more people don't get this reference.

And as for Shaq, I believe it was stated that Shaq was the best and most dominant college player at the time, but Christian Laettner was a better "team player" which is why he was chosen. It's probably better that they chose Laettner because it would've been a hell of a mess cleaning up broken shards of glass after his dunks. It might've cost them a timeout or two.

Hmmmm....

When it comes to positions how would this matchup work out:

PG: Billups vs. Magic (Or Paul vs Stockton...take your pick)
SG: Kobe vs. MJ
SF: Lebron vs. Pippen (or Bird your pick)
PF: Stoudemire vs. Malone (or Barkley)
C: Howard vs. Robinson

And you still have Shaq, Brand, and Bosh for bigs on the bench for the '08 team.

I don't know. I give the edge to the '92 team in PG & SG positions. But from SF on down I have to say that '08 is a serious roster of insanely atheletic dudes who can dominate in the paint and on the boards.

Pippen was a very good defensive player. Do NOT underestimate that.

Malone would throw an elbow or two and Stoudemire would not recover. Barkley was not shabby either.

Robinson was a great stopper as well and could score like crazy. Ewing could hit shots from about anywhere inside the 3 point line.

The only near equal part I see is Pippen and Lebron. I am not saying Pippen is better but given the circumstances of Pippen from 1992, that would be one awesome matchup.

I don't think Pippen or Barkley ever saw a forward with the combination of speed, strength, and Basketball IQ that Lebron possesses.

And Ewing and Robinson never had to guard the combination pure muscle, height and speed that Stoudemire and Howard have. If you are getting beat on the step you have to foul or hope your help can rotate over fast enough.

I dunno....the way players are built now vs. 20 years ago is pretty crazy.

You obviously don't have a clue about how good Robinson was. The man scored 71pts in a game! He and Hakeem were the two best centers of the past 30yrs. Yes, better than Shaq.

Stoudemire over Malone/Barkley. Once the round mound of rebound pushed Stoudemire around a few times, Stoudemire would have been in the Jacuzzi in the locker room nursing his bruises. Malone ould have been on the court working his outside shooting and doing pick & rolls with Stockton.

Pippen would have shut down Lebron. Pippen was a defensive force and Pippen, Rodman, & Jordan were defensive stoppers that won 72-games.

No doubt it's the "4 minute mile effect" where generations of athletes are generally better than their previous counterparts. But the original Dream Team was so top notch, so legendary it's unbelievable. I think 1992 would edge out 2008.

Pippen may have had the ability to shut down Lebron. He would NOT have to score just play monstrous defense and he was really good at that. Robinson is way more versatile than Howard. Robinson could score with the best of them. "Round mound of rebound" made me laugh also. His flying elbows would knock Stoudemire to the ground.

David Robinson was more athletic than both Stoudemire and Howard, plus he actually had a midrange game.
