Well, the DVD came out and this seems to be primarily a love or hate movie with no in betweens. Personally I love it...it's my second favorite of 2001 next to LOTR. The DVD kicks some major booty. I also can't wait to see some more work by Osment...damn that kid is good. He is more mature and well-spoken than many adults I know. He's interviewed on the dvd.

I liked it .

But.... They could have dropped the ending! I mean, it would have been PERFECT if it had ended when the kid got stuck in the bottom of the sea. The ending that followed was unneeded and somewhat lame.

For some reason I feel it was added on just to have a "nice" ending. If it had ended the way I suggested, it would have been too downbeat for american audience (who seem to demand at least marginally happy ending).

I liked the ending....well i think i did moreso because it was fascinating.

spoilers below

you get to see the future, the evolved mecha's who are now a nearly perfect race...all they lack is the feeling of true love and david is their only way to find this. so they give him what he wants to find out basically.

i still can't believe how many people thought they were aliens.

I didn't like it that much. It was pretty good until the ending, which just left me with a bad overall feeling. It should have ended much earlier than it did.

well i'm not sure about the love part, they only mentioned that they were interested in the thing that humans called spirit, so that might not include love. and yea, i can't believe how many people didn't get the ending, my two friends were convinced they were aliens.. i was like wtf where the #%@ did you get that? also, there is the possibility that the robots created a virtual endng for david since they felt sorry for em. meaning all that jibberish about bringing the momback for one day is just a story they told him. the future robot did mention how david was made so young, so they might have been holding back the real truth from him.

<< also, there is the possibility that the robots created a virtual endng for david since they felt sorry for em >>

my interpretation always was that the ending WAS virtual. they gave him what he wanted so they could "learn" from him. learn isn't the best word but you know what i'm trying to say...

*warning* spoilers if you haven't seen the film.

Anyway.... I thought the beginning was pretty good, but most of the film after he met Jude Law was pretty dumb IMO (and I like pretty much every movie Jude Law is in). I didn't understand why Jude stuck with the kid for so long, among many other things. The plot got pretty predictable for awhile, however the film totally goes into uncharted territory once he meets the "blue fairy". I liked the whole "aliens trying to understand mankind" thing that was going on there, but the "we can clone someone, but only for a day" concept doesn't make any sense, especially by today's standards. Perhaps 10+ years ago (when Kubrick was toiling with how to make the film) it made more sense, but with our modern knowledge of cloning, that idea is totally bogus. That basically ruined the movie for me. I liked some of the ideas in it, however.

I hope someone can understand my ranting, because I sure can't!

Ugh

#1 they weren't aliens
#2 they told david that because they just wanted to make him happy/feel loved, they didn't clone her. it was all a simulation. this is open to speculation but this isn;t one of those things you can just take literally

yup kami the guy didn't read the previous posts b4 posting himself it seems. kinda weird not to like a movie because you totally missed the boat. they weren't aliens because aliens have nothing to do with the movie, the movie is about ai. the "aliens" have bodies that seem to be full of circuitry, u can see displays projected on their faces. they are basically humanoid with features slowly dissapearing.. very much in a evolutionary way.. why would futuristic robots need hair etc.. the more human features would slowly be discarded perhaps. they networked, they networked with the boy, who is a robot. the movie makes the prediciton that in the future only robots will survive and as for your "only a day cloning" that part was answered in the previous posts..the entire last part with david could have been virtual. it wouldn't be hard for 2000 year advanced ai beings to create a virtual world for david...notice how they were peering into it using that weird floating table display?

Ok but, just not all it was cracked up to be, the tech/biology factor seemed a little dated

t thought it was pretty boring too. I thought it would really open up some ideas for me, but it just seem recycled from other stuff I've seen/thought/read.
As with Nemesis77, that ending (instead of cutting him off at the sea- where I thought had a powerful effect on me) really sucked.

Had potential, but it really came down to "I get it. The AI is real. This brings up ethical/moral dilmenas. Now stop crying!"

It was kinda stupid, and you could tell when the movie wasn't something Kubrik would have wanted...
I don't know if it was just me, but didn't all the robots seem to have emotions....

Maybe I'll rewatch it sometime. I watched the first hour and a half or so then missed about 10-20 minutes close to the end. This may explain some of my not understanding what was going on, but they really needed to clarify that they were apparently not aliens. Do you guys think that everyone at the end of 2001: A space Odyssey said: Oh look, Starchild. That kid is like the rebirth of the old man, and blah blah? Kubrick's films are so abstract, you could argue that you need to be dropping acid to truly understand them

I liked the beginning, but the last hour was really too far fetched for me I don't want to say anything since I'd spoil it for anyone who didn't see it.

I really wanted to like it, but found myself wanting it to end. I like movies that move along slowly, but this one almost put me in a coma.
IMHO.....
