<< spoiler below
you get to see the future, the evolved mecha's who are now a nearly perfect race...all they lack is the feeling of true love and david is their only way to find this. so they give him what he wants to find out basically.
i still can't believe how many people thought they were aliens.
well i'm not sure about the love part, they only mentioned that they were interested in the thing that humans called spirit, so that might not include love. and yea, i can't believe how many people didn't get the ending, my two friends were convinced they were aliens.. i was like wtf where the #%@ did you get that? also, there is the possibility that the robots created a virtual endng for david since they felt sorry for em. meaning all that jibberish about bringing the momback for one day is just a story they told him. the future robot did mention how david was made so young, so they might have been holding back the real truth from him. >>
I think the ending was terrible. I love the entire movie until the last 20 minutes of it... it had no continuity. What the director should have done was can all that 3rd person narration. There should never be a narrator. Then, between the time that David was stuck underwater, and when the "perfect mechas" rescue him, there should have been at least 10 minutes of scenes implying the world was progressing over 2000 years. You know, some quick flashes of world news and radio broadcasts, jumping decades and centuries at a time, kind of like "new David mecha recalled by court order" then 40 years later "earth in the middle of thermal breakdown" then another few hundred years "science mechas solve spacetime formula", then a few more hundred years, another news cast "mecha intelligence reaches new level, hope to save mankind", and then one last news cast by the mecha themselves, "Last remaining Orga die, last of the human kind extinct, dna archive only hope".
This makes sense, since the perfect mecha explain to David that 2000 year have gone by, I don't know why the Narrator even bothers to explain this ahead of time.
I admint I was a bit confused as well what those perfect Mecha were. I thought they were aliens too, but mechanical ones. The script didn't make that very clear...
