you get to see the future, the evolved mecha's who are now a nearly perfect race...all they lack is the feeling of true love and david is their only way to find this. so they give him what he wants to find out basically.

i still can't believe how many people thought they were aliens.

well i'm not sure about the love part, they only mentioned that they were interested in the thing that humans called spirit, so that might not include love. and yea, i can't believe how many people didn't get the ending, my two friends were convinced they were aliens.. i was like wtf where the #%@ did you get that? also, there is the possibility that the robots created a virtual endng for david since they felt sorry for em. meaning all that jibberish about bringing the momback for one day is just a story they told him. the future robot did mention how david was made so young, so they might have been holding back the real truth from him.
>>

I think the ending was terrible. I love the entire movie until the last 20 minutes of it... it had no continuity. What the director should have done was can all that 3rd person narration. There should never be a narrator. Then, between the time that David was stuck underwater, and when the "perfect mechas" rescue him, there should have been at least 10 minutes of scenes implying the world was progressing over 2000 years. You know, some quick flashes of world news and radio broadcasts, jumping decades and centuries at a time, kind of like "new David mecha recalled by court order" then 40 years later "earth in the middle of thermal breakdown" then another few hundred years "science mechas solve spacetime formula", then a few more hundred years, another news cast "mecha intelligence reaches new level, hope to save mankind", and then one last news cast by the mecha themselves, "Last remaining Orga die, last of the human kind extinct, dna archive only hope".

This makes sense, since the perfect mecha explain to David that 2000 year have gone by, I don't know why the Narrator even bothers to explain this ahead of time.

I admint I was a bit confused as well what those perfect Mecha were. I thought they were aliens too, but mechanical ones. The script didn't make that very clear...

<< *warning* spoilers if you haven't seen the film.

Anyway.... I thought the beginning was pretty good, but most of the film after he met Jude Law was pretty dumb IMO (and I like pretty much every movie Jude Law is in). I didn't understand why Jude stuck with the kid for so long, among many other things. The plot got pretty predictable for awhile, however the film totally goes into uncharted territory once he meets the "blue fairy". I liked the whole "aliens trying to understand mankind" thing that was going on there, but the "we can clone someone, but only for a day" concept doesn't make any sense, especially by today's standards. Perhaps 10+ years ago (when Kubrick was toiling with how to make the film) it made more sense, but with our modern knowledge of cloning, that idea is totally bogus. That basically ruined the movie for me. I liked some of the ideas in it, however.

I hope someone can understand my ranting, because I sure can't!

No, it wasn't just a matter of CLONING, it was the fact they could bring back the intellectual/spiritual essence of the person's mind only for a day. Cloning humans wasn't going to do them any good. You'd end up with a bunch of babies with no means of living. They're objective was to learn from the humans from 2000 years ago... therefore, the need to bring back their memories as well.

wow, what a violent reaction to my saying "those are aliens", Yeah, I know they are "mecha" but 2000 years later, they might as well be aliens.

Or, maybe I can put it this way: THOSE ARE ALIENS!!!

I saw it last night and hated it. What a load of disjointed, bizzare emotional manipulation (or attempted anyway).

Some nice visuals and good acting, but overall really disappointing.

I don't think this is true at all. They couldn't do anything to help him until teddy produced the mom's hair. The only reason to need the hair was for DNA. A simulation they could have done anytime right? Still I thought the "one day" thing was kind of forced.

well maybe they didn't bother reading teddys mind or planned to use teddy to setup their little fairy tale end if david couldn't be convinced to go down a different path. also perhaps a simulation even in vr would be more complete if dna were around, dna are the blue prints after all.

. The script didn't make that very clear...

um did you see my long ass post with quotes and stuff just a couple above your own? the script makes it clear, what did you want...to be beaten over the head with it?

i dunno, i bought that 2000 years had passed due to the ice and weird beings. explaining too much would have been cheesy. like trying to explain in detail how a warp reactor works in startrek, you only come out looking foolish.

pointing upward again. it makes it pretty damn clear.

Is anyone else with me that the beginning was the best part and that a very interesting movie could have been made without David leaving the house?

I gotta tell ya, I think I enjoyed this movie. Now, I say "i think" because I'm not sure if I've fully grasped all the abstract ideas being portrayed by this movie. I've greatly enjoyed this thread, because, to be honest, I thought they were aliens too and kind of groaned when I first saw them. Now I think it makes total sense that they were advanced Mecha

Here's a couple of my thoughts/questions:

1.) How can anyone say that the kid isn't a good actor? He is incredible and I think does an excellent job portraying a robot child. Really freaky, if you ask me.
2.) I think we need to invent that Dr. Know booth thingy.
3.) How smart was that Teddy Bear toy? He had a simple on/off switch, but really seemed to have emotions and cared for David.
4.) The special effects were incredible in this movie. That was a great scene where all the messed up mechas were rummaging through the trash heap trying to snap on extra parts. Looked pretty real.
5.) What was the point of the dead girl in the apartment when Jigalo Joe had blonde hair? I understand that her boyfriend/husband was jealous or whatever, but how did it affect the plot? Was Joe "giving up the game" so to speak when he ripped off his UPC symbol on his chest. Also, did these robots have these sort of feelings?
6.) I see dead people. (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Sorry, but I don't make it a point to log onto the internet and read about the movie while I'm watching it.

The "script" is more than the "dialogue". The script includes what the actors are saying, what the setting is, the imagery, etc. The script did not make the ending very clear.

If it did, people wouldn't be so confused.

That's pretty much all that the short story was.

If you would like, I can explain to you how a warp reactor works.

Don't get so defensive. I wonder why something so damn clear is getting so damn confused with the majority of people watching it.

Sorry, but I don't make it a point to log onto the internet and read about the movie while I'm watching it.

eh? now i'm confused.

thats definetly true, but i wanted to give people atleast something concrete to work on.. and thats the best you can do on a net forum its not clear as in hammering you over the head, but just enough that its pretty obvious once u think about it.

So they're not? That's honestly the impression I got. I think it would have been better to end the movie with the kid/robot at the bottom of the sea.
