Did you recieve corporal punishment when you were young?

Only once. My 7th grade prof slapped me on the face after several warnings to stop talking in class. Learned my lesson.

I got paddled by my dad's favorite hair brush. I really got it bad when I was four, and had been screaming "vagina" around the store, which I found incredibly funny. Fortunately, no one took notice, as I was with my mum and bro (who was egging me on). My dad found out and really put the paddle on me. I 'member how he did it, his face would get scarlet red, he would shout in his tremendously loud voice, and I would be scared out of my wits. He then would take me by the collar of my shirt, and paddle me in a closet. It was very effective, because now that I think about it, we would have turned into savages, because we were really wild. I 'member my brother did something really bad (I have no idea what it was) and my dad paddled him on the couch so hard, the couch fell apart (it was an old couch, but bits and pieces of the stuffing were hanging out by the end). Once he smacked my bare buttocks for something minor. I broke my brother's slinky, and I got a minor paddle and a shout at. Basically, I was really kept in line, because I did some wild things. We lived in a not so hot area of Chicago, and I guess the old man was afraid I'd turn into all the other punks.
Luckily, we soon moved to a suburb in Chicago, and then moved to San Diego.
But yeah, there was a reason to it all, and I don't feel scarred or hurt or intimidated because of this. So I think liberals and other busybodies who complain about it should have a nice glass of STFU.

My dad had The Belt, too. Occasional hand, but mostly The Belt.

Also, when I was younger, he would make me to to a particular bush and pick out a switch. You didn't dare pick out a weak green one, either.

My dad had an out of control temper....lots of times I deserved a whipping, but many times I did not.

I also got plenty of paddlings at school. Most of them were deserved, too.

I've always said I would spank my kids, but I hardly ever have. I will if need be, though.

Heh, beat me too it. Amusingly it still works though. I'm pretty sure an open palm qualifies as corporeal.

Wooden spoon FTW!! or well I guess it would be FTL. In reality I think children need to be smacked like that when they are young. When you are four you don't have a good sense of I shouldn't do X because Y will happen because at that age you have no idea what Y could potentially be. So I see it as parents solving one of the unknowns for you. Set Y = to spanking.

I got the feather duster on the palm, preceded by a lengthy lecture. Looking back, the physical punishment didn't impact me nearly as much as the lecture - it just drove the point in (for a few months until i forgot again).

Corporal punishment CAN be very good, IF done in the right way, for the right reasons. Otherwise it's just somebody big hitting somebody small. Which is pretty much human behavior in general.

I rarely got it, more's the pity. Numberless endless shouting lectures about how your mother's life was infinity harder than yours, in great detail, are far less palatable and far less effective than a few good quick fire-in-the-eyes-don't-you-dare-cross-me swats on the tush.

But my mother did her best...far better than her parents did for her. And my father passed right before I turned 7, so he wasn't able to be there for me like he wanted to.

If I have kids, they will learn to do what I say, when I say, how I say, with a respectful attitude. If kids don't learn to respect and obey their parents, the two people who have done the most for them of anybody in the world, how will they ever learn to respect God and other people and lead a decent, happy life?

To start off,

My mom loved to use the clothes hangers. It didn't hurt when it was the cheap plastic ones, but heaven forbid if it were the wooden ones. The plastic ones would break after one or two hits. the Wooden ones never broke. My parents stopped hitting me around junior high school.

My mom would use anything in the area that she could get her hands on. my dad would usually explode and hit/kick/push. I remember pissing him off sooo bad one time that he choked me. I deserved all of it though....was such a damn trouble maker when I was younger.

yep, my parents tried to use it all the way up till I turned 18....mom loved the jug cord and dad...well anything he could find handy at the time.

It sort of lost it's affect once I turned 15....and then it was a joke the last time mum hit me with the jug cord, shortly before my 18th birthday....fvck I never laughed so hard in my life, she goes for this almighty swing to get me up the back of the legs with it, and as soon as the cord hits me I burst out laughing and asked is that the best that she could do...from then on, both my parents began just arguing with me instead...punishment became pretty pointless once they realised that hitting me had no effect, and grounding didn't work either...I prefered to stay inside and use my PC (I always wondered why they didn't just confiscate that....it might have worked as a punishment).
