I'm watching it now (Alaska Time) and what I'd like to know is who ripped who off? This movie is very close to The Haunting with Liam Neeson. Psychic Phenomenon university professor and his gang spend the night in a "haunted house." My God, hasn't this story been done to death already? I think King is turning into a hack writer.

Interesting story so far, a lot of it based on truth. It's actually inspired by the true story of the Winchester Mystery House located in San Jose, CA. You can read about it here. I've been to that house before (anyone can, tours every day of the week), it's pretty cool. Very big house, mush of which are off limits, kind of spooky in parts, but it's just a big tourist attraction now.

It had some interesting parts but there were way to many shots of people staring at the house or whatever and the dialog was pretty cornball.

Not to give to much away to the Alaskan watchers but I thought part 2 was slow.

But part 3 should be excellent with so many questions to answer.

I can't wait

i thought it had its moments, but that Emory dude and his mom just got plain irritating... kinda killed the mood for me from suspenseful to irritating... can't wait for part 3 now

Eventhough Rose Red has it problems I still think it is superior to both The Haunting (Liam Neesom version) and House on Haunted Hill (crap - but entertaining). The whole premise of the autistic girl going to the house is weak. Emory's vision of the bloody fridge was ok, but became campy when the hand came shooting out. The casting is pretty good. The only weak points is Annie the autistic teen (looks too clean/good - unless she turns darker). Nancy Travers is good as the scientist, but went over the top with her bloody hand scene. There's almost always some dislikeable disfuntional character in King's stories. Emory is this person.

Rose Red is similar to The Haunting because King & Spielberg collaborated on a single ghost story they were going to make into a movie. Both used the original movie, The Haunting as the inspiration. Differences in the direction of the characters split the partnership apart. Spielberg eventually got his story made (The Haunting) through his studio. Rose Red is King's version. Read about it in last Sunday's LA Times Calendar section. Here's the article.

Side Note: David Dukes, the person who the miniseries is dedicated to, is the actor who plays the head of the psych dept at the college. He died on a tennis court when this movie was being made. He filmed most of the parts before he died.

Edit: Added link and fixed grammer.

Even though I watched all 6 hours of this silly thing, I still think Stephen King's target audience is 6th graders... at least that's when I read 2 or 3 of his books, I find it hard to believe that anyone older would find them interesting.

Which makes the fact that I watched the entire thing all the more disturbing.

Not too good

I was very disappointed in the ending

Left alot to be desired

I still think Tommyknockers was one of his better miniseries

Please. What have you read that he's written?

The man is a genius; practically all of his major works are linked together under one story arc. I didn't get to see the first two parts, and I only saw half of the third. Hopefully it will come out on DVD because he talks about Rose Red in Black House.

Xerox Man, do you recall approximately where in "Black House" was "Rose Red" mentioned? I remember being tickled to find a mention of the breaker Ted Brautigan in there (King sure knows how to name-drop his own characters!) but I did not notice anything about "Rose Red," probably because I hadn't heard about the miniseries when I was reading "Black House."

Actually I read quite a few in middle school during "reading" class: 4 Past Midnight, Pet Semetary, Dark Half, Shining, Tommyknockers, Cujo, a couple more that I can't remember... oh yeah that Dark Tower one, the first one. I thought they were cool back then, but like I said now they seem like kids books or something, not saying he isn't a good writer... okay maybe I am.

I loaned the book out so I can't refer to it to be sure, but it's in the part where the narrator is discussing the building of Bleak House. It says Bleak House made Rose Red look like a carnival ride or something like that, hehe.
