Did your parents drag you to church and expose you to the weird people?

Thinking back to my youth, I remember the thousands of times my Mother dragged us to church. We went to a Catholic school, so church was mandatory every Sunday, every holy day and every Friday as well during Lent.

Anyway, I remember "the weird people" that would sit around us and scare me, when I was a child. They were the psychopathic types that would sit there during the service and mumble to themselves. Not praying. MUMBLING....staring off, empty-eyed into the distance.

I remember this one woman...she was dressed kinda hippie-like. She went up to receive the holy communion. After which, she proceed to do some kind of "Yoga-Dance" that's how best I can describe it- up on the altar, blocking the other patrons from receiving. The priest would move over, she'd move over, continuing her yoga dance.

Then she turned to explain to the congregation how God wanted her to express her feelings to the crowd...God wanted her to display her "inner peace"....damn freak.

Anyway, that's one of my mental scars from church. I'm so glad I'm a rational adult now and can avoid organized religion like the plague that it is.

Anyone else have any weird church stories.

ps
I don't care if you've been "saved". Keep it to yourself. No one wants to see you climb up on your soapbox. Freak.

Speaking of weddings...has anyone been to a wedding where someone "objected"? Or the bride/groom didn't show up? Or some guy confessed his love for the groom/bride?

[editz] Don't condone religion if it makes people happy, weird or not.

Yeah, my mother used to drag me to church. One time she brought a really weird guy from church to visit our house. A real nutjob. He was the priest.

I don't remember any weirdos at my church when I was little. My parents took me to church until I was about thirteen then I didn' t have to go if I didn't want. I was always bored in church. The few times I have been since college have been better, at least the boredom factor isn't as high.

My parents only took us to church on holidays - Easter and Christmas. But, I always wanted to go with the neighbor kids because their church had lots of free donuts every Sunday, I stayed the night over their house a lot so I could go to church with them. Chocolate with chocolate frosting please...what? No, no sermon, just the donuts, thanks...

Believe it or not, me went to Christian church for a few months when I was 15 . I couldn't justify the stuff I heard there, so I stopped going there.

I've never been to church. the only time I've been in one was to see my friend's kickass sound setup (for his church) and for a Boy Scout ceremony.

came back and bit me in the ass though, a friend won't go out with me because I'm not christian like her :disgust:

my family never went to church until I was sixteen (other than Xmas and Easter). Now we go all the time. I kind of like it. My church has a very strong sense of community. My pastor also gives great sermons that are actually interesting to listen to. The music is great as well; we have a choir, bell, choir, chruch band... memebers of the chruch are always volunteering to play the organ, flutes, violins, sing solos... its like a concert every sunday!! we also have a dance group that puts on a performance every other sunday as well!

a bit off the subject, but... either

a.) she doesn't like you, and that was just an excuse

or

b.) she does like you, and this was for real, in which case... you have to ask yourself if you would really want to date someone like that

That sucks. I stopped going because I didn't really enjoy listening to them preach what I usually do is a sin and most of all, I was getting bored.

I also went to catholic schools but mass was said in Latin then by priests with heavy brogue's ,7 yr olds were required to fast till they were damm near fainting and the devil lurked behind every bush. There were no "psychotic types" anywhere. LOL, I won't get into my feelings on my upbringing but I will say that the experince contributed heavily into making me the fine, upstanding wild woman I grew up to be

LOL! That's just too funny.

Yea, the parents used to drag me to church every Sunday until I was about 14. I hated it, I resented it. It was boring, regimented, intolerant for alternative thought and without much meaning for me. Eventually, I only got dragged only for the holidays like Christmas and Easter. Then it was Christmas only. And finally, my parents don't argue with me anymore and I haven't been to church in 3 years.

Not belonging to a church is a financial windfall, really. My parent's catholic church expects $20 a week for the regular collection and then a few bucks extra for the weekly "secondary" collection (paying for missionaries and stuff). There's also the "heating bill" collection and the "AC bill" collection. I think they have a snowplow collection, landscaping collection, automotive fleet collection(!) and whatever-we-can-come-up-with-next collection. Oh, and then there's the block collection where the priest shows up, says a few prayers and waits for the check (which is supposed to amount to $250 per working individual in a household). Lot of cash!

So all of that money I am saving can get redirected to my favorite socially liberal organizations, like the Freedom From Religion Foundation.

My mom took me to some fairly extreme fringe churches when I was growing up. Non-denominational charasmatic church with a woman pastor, people speaking in tongues, getting slain in the spirit, door-to-door witnessing, demons cast out, appocalyptic guest speakers...

That was just ONE of the churches. We went to a Jesus-only church, where the trinity was denied, and if you were baptized in the "Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit" you weren't saved. The proper way to be baptized was to say "In the name of Jesus".

We went to a Pentecostal church for years too. It wasn't as fringe as the non-denominational charasmatic church, but it was short on rational, reasonable teaching and long on "spritual" feelings and experiences.

Ultimately I found that there ARE rational, reasonable Christians. And there are irrational, unorthodox, ignorant Christians. Much like every other religion, including atheism. People are either learning why it is they believe what they believe, or they are willfully ignorant because they are comfortable where they are and don't want to find out that their views are irrational.

I didn't know there was such a thing as a Charismatic Catholic church. I've heard of Catholic churches that went as far as to as worshiping Mary and the saints... but never have I heard such a Pentecostal twist.
