Did your State make the "worst drivers list"?

Ten states made the final cut in the five-week "States with the Worst Drivers" online poll for the Speed Channel. More than 16,000 people voted ...
1. Massachusetts
2. Florida
3. California
4. New York
5. New Jersey
6. Ohio
7. Illinois
8. Texas
9. Virginia
10. Maryland

Bad drivers, said Despain, are usually "the people right across the border from where you live, or people in the state you just moved to or from."

"I suspect it's not very rational. I doubt anyone voted for a state based on the fact they're a lousy driver and they drive there. Internally, we were all pulling for Florida. We're all absolutely convinced Florida has the worst drivers in America."

Why the drive-time dissing for Florida?

"I have a thing about people who hog the passing lane," Despain said. "I tend to take a dim view of Florida because I think there's a disproportionate number of people there who fail to fully appreciate the benefits of lane discipline."

I remember geezer olympics when I was stationed in Florida. In addition to the left lane thing they love to stop their land yachts at the top of interstate entrance ramps. It made for some fun merging. :disgust: From what I have seen I think Virginia and Maryland should be higher than they are as well. Everyone in the DC metro area has a personal grant to the left lane and they don't hesitate to enforce their own personal speed limit.

I can attest to the drivers in Massachusetts being horrible drivers. Probably because so many of them are drunk!

7 of the 10 are yankee states, 8 of 10 if you count Florida, which is a state full of old yankees.
(and yes, I counted Maryland, they are in yankee land now, and I should have counted Virginia, too.)

I'm not surprised. Funny how all the yankees come down south and complain that nobody knows how to drive, yet their own states are the top offenders.
I'm in N.C, and the main reason that nobody knows how to drive here anymore is all the yankees that have moved here.

What's the definition of "The South"? In fact, what is the South actually "south" of? That's right, the Mason-Dixon Line, the line that runs between Pennsylvania and Maryland...

And while I agree that Chicagoland is terrible, it should be judged seperately from downstate Illinois, which I've never really found to be a problem.

The same goes for Maryland outside the Beltway and suburbs.

No, but people from north and south are still different, and what I said is absolutely true.

Modern Mason-Dixon line is down to around Richmond now. 10 more years and it may be Raleigh.
The same goes for Maryland outside the Beltway and suburbs.

Well, last time I drove home, coming into Maryland I still passed the sign. I guess they haven't gotten around to moving that yet.

I can understand how you could make the mistake of lumping Maryland in (many people do); however, there are many people in Maryland a lot more adamant about it than I.

But Virginia? The capitol of the confederacy? I didn't think anyone would make that mistake.

All I see is a list of the most populated states / with the biggest cities. It's no wonder they made "the list". What a bunch of crock.

It's also the truth. Most anyone who's actually from here (and we're getting few and far between nowadays) will agree.
I remember a couple years ago we had like a 20" snow. Several wrecker drivers were interviewed, and they all said that the majority of their tows were people from up north who thought they knew how to drive in the snow.
Some chick called the local TV channel WRAL 5 and said she was from Jersey and complained that she was stuck in the snow and was bitching about how nobody in the state could drive, and we didn't know how to deal with snow.
The TV guy, Mark Roberts, basically asked her why she didn't stay off the road like the Highway Patrol asked her and told her that she was part of the problem.

Actually once you get out of the close in suburbs of Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax in Virginia or Prince Georges and Montgomery counties in Maryland you might be very surprised how southern both these states really are.

Yeah, they're pretty bad...any time I see one on the interstate here in VT, I think "He's gonna do something stupid" And then, thats exactly what they do.

Not a state, but drivers from Quebec are even worse. Some one needs to inform them that the directionals are standard on cars for a reason.
