It's nearly impossible to speed or drive recklessly due to the cratersized potholes and orange under-construction cones that decorate our streets
I think the "yankees" drive good. Its my original fellow southerners that need new driving lessons. [The Northerners need language lessons -- say it with me "y'all" or "you (plural)" not "you guys" or "youse guys".] Example: Eastern North Carolina. Whereas NC west of the I-95 corridor the speed limit is a suggestion by both the drivers and police (the Cops usually let you go 10 MPH above, sometimes 15), east of that the speed limit is divine law and you better not get near it.
This is the best advice for traveling in NC --
Don't travel near or through Greenville, NC unless absolutely necessary. I just graduated from ECU in Greenville, and nobody drives near the speed limit. It is very frustrating. I got caught behind two distinct people going 25 in a 55 in an area where people usually only go 45 in a 55. If you are going to Cape Hattaras, take US-64 not US-264.
I'm not suprissed about Virginia. I hate Virginia. The slogan "Virginia is for lovers" is a misnomer. I hate Virginia because radar detectors are illegal, police camp out on I-95, and they use airplanes to clock you. IMO, fast driving is not unsafe; just more deadly (higher speed = higher chance of injury). Slow driving is unsafe. 55 on I-95 is
WRONG no matter how you justify it.
And Florida. You know Florida is a no-fault state. No matter who caused the wreck, it isn't anyone's fault. My boss, an ex-Floridian, says it is because of all the old people causing wrecks. Which helps prove my theory: slow driving is unsafe driving.
