Didn't like sirrius radio

I had a rental car last week that had a current subscription to sirrius satellite radio. I actually enjoyed several of the stations the service offers, but the quality was horrible, it sounded like a low quality mp3 rather than CD quality audio to my ears ie. cymbals sounded like a hiss rather than a crash. Is this typical of satellite radio or is the hardware in the vehicle to blame?

It used to be pretty good quality when I had it, similar to CD I felt. But I have the more expensive Bose system in my car. (not that its the greatest, but its decent) Odds are good that your rental had poor equipment supporting it.

Nope. That's Satellite radio for you. And the exact reason why I stopped using them. They have FAR too many stations and dilute down their stream sizes to the point of it being compressed, garbled trash. The stations have far too much overlap and are unneccessary. If they would cut the stations in half, merge similar styles together and give them twice the bandwith streams the quality would improve greatly.

I told them exactly that and the CSR actually got angry with me and asked why I would ever want *less* selection.

EDIT: FWIW, I was an original Sirius subscriber back in the early 2000's when Faction used to be an absolutely free form station and easily one of the most unique radio stations you could find. I've tried recent subscriptions since the XM merger in GM and Toyota vehicles and the quality is far far worse than traditional FM.
