If you are suggesting that the position should not have existed - I could agree.
However, would you have had that position if it wouldn't have been brought to light? Basically - are you calling for the elimination of the position - or looking to score political points based on X,Y,Z?

I'm just pointing out how foolish you neocons look rushing to defend this.

Clearly I shouldn't have gotten my job either then because I got hired here with no industry experience! Oh, yeah, and my dad worked here(he didn't directly hire me) and was my direct boss for a short while too. NEPOTISM!!! Oh wait, I dropped out of college too! Clearly I should not have gotten a job at this company(and then proceed to work my way up). Psstt - I got a raise quickly too... just sayin'

Again, it may look and smell bad but it's what you get when gov't gets so big people can't keep an eye on it all.

Congratulations to you, you are the typical conservative who got to where you are because of your family yet considers yourself self made. Do you want a cookie?

The guy isn't qualified in any way for his position. For government jobs like this, a degree is usually required. He doesn't have the degree OR experience OR environmental regulation skills.

The reason it's even more distasteful than usual is because Walker is trying to take bargaining rights away from qualified workers making much less on the BS basis that it's necessary to balance the budget.

Then he got hired for one job and then was moved to another. I just had the same thing happen to me recently. One job just paid more than the other.

Basically I was working a contract for X amount for the past year. That contract was expiring and my company wanted to keep me. A position opened up on another contract which paid more than what I was working on previously. I am also talking a significant amount more as well. About $15K per year. The funny thing is, for my new job it was for a web development position and doing sharepoint. I have never worked with or seen sharepoint and have done only a limited amount of web development in the past. But I have been a programmer for 10+ years. They took a chance and moved me over. So far my boss says he couldn't have been happier and doubted anyone he brought in even with sharepoint + web development skills would be faster or better than me. I already got another raise because of it to the tune of another $5K effective at the end of this month.

So yah, stuff like this does happen.
Good for you. In fact, great for you and your company too, as it seems you both came out ahead. That's the point and the beauty of capitalism. I remain very skeptical of Deschane though, in spite of the laughably liberal article.

One small point for the Pubbies - Walker isn't having Deschane's future campaign contributions held out by the state. (Yeah, the quality of silver linings has greatly declined.)

I have my personal doubts as well. But I am also the type of person to take a chance on another person. I am willing to give people a shot to prove themselves. Who knows? Maybe this kid ends up being the best thing ever for this position. I highly doubt it, but stranger things have occurred.

The point being, people are making a huge issue of a non issue and this original article was tasteless in the extreme. If the argument is instead over the state WI making any new government positions what so ever then that is something else entirely worth arguing over.

that is one of the most slanted articles...

wow.

Man, that's an understatement.

That's one of the worst attack pieces I've ever read.

The DUI's are irrelevent, he's not being hired as a state trooper or commercial driver etc.

$92K coming from a trade group is spoken of as an (illegal?) campaign contribution from the guy's father. I'm hesitant to take that at face value.

It sure would've been nice if the author of the article allowed the other side to give a response. That's S.O.P., or should be. I'd like to have some confirmation on the hiring process, the required qualificiations and the responsibilities. I'm reluctant to take the authors word for it; he sounds way too butt hurt to trust to be accurate.

Having said that, if the guy got hired as 'payback' I hope somebody gets in truoble. I'd also say I'm not sure Walker would be the guy. He might be, and should share some responsibility if only because he's governor, but I doubt he has time to personally pick every applicant for new positions.

I don't like the immediate raise either. Way too hypocritical for an admin that's trying to cut costs.

Edit: Later saw this:

A month later, Secretary David Ross, a Walker cabinet member, named Deschane the bureau director of board services, a job that paid $64,728 a year.

Not long after, lawmakers approved the governor's plan to convert the Department of Commerce to a public-private hybrid in charge of attracting and retaining businesses, with its regulatory and environmental functions being moved to other agencies.

Commerce Secretary Paul Jadin then appointed Deschane to his new post there to oversee the changes.

Doesn't look like a raise, but rather a new job paying more. Also, and perhaps I'm not fully understanding the above, but it doesn't look like regulating underwater tanks has anything to do with his (new) job responsibilities.

Then why raise the cry and hullabaloo over this in the first place? If that was your sole point then make it first and clearly. You think that the government in WI should not be hiring anyone. Yay great! Opinion stated and point made. Instead you did argue about the merits of the kid and other crap that had absolutely nothing to do with what your opinion there being any new government positions in WI.

Do you not see how silly that was?

Show me where you think I argued about the "merits of the kid". All I've been talking about is unjustified (and irresponsible) raises in light of the state's financial situation.

I don't see it as defending, because I certainly am not doing such. However I am pointing out how silly the attack by the left is.

Not really. Your knuckle dragging ass came in here and began defending this guy. Why should people as stupid as you be allowed to vote?

At least on the left we can be critical of ourselves. The right is some block of retard in lock step with whatever they tell you to think. Pathetic.

Wrong junior. I had a connection here, I also had connections other places and offers when I chose this job over the others. You see, I always knew I wanted to do this type of work - my brain is wired for it. I took less money to start here than I'd have gotten at the other places but I knew there would be opportunity for growth and advancement here and it's just what happened. I started at the bottom and am now near the top. So no, you are wrong, my family did not get me here - my hard work and ability did.

*******

Maybe he's not qualified. And? We've hired "qualified" people who can't do their job and we've also hired others who are less than qualified but took the chance based on ambition and drive. Hiring based on a piece of paper and ignoring those who don't is stupid. In some cases it might be needed, especially in something highly technical but most others do not - especially if it's in one of the low-mid "management" areas.

The union thing has exactly ZERO to do with this issue - unless you only look at the creation of a position. Who filled it is irrelevant to the union issue. So again, are you looking for points or is your position consistent because if your argument is about experience - the union argument doesn't fly.

You obviously did not read what I posted. Meh, didn't expect those in a tizzy to turn on the critical thinking portion since emotion would just shut it down anyway.

I don't consider the DUI issue to be relevant to the true scandal here. The question you should be asking is, was this guy the most qualified applicant? Was he even in the top 100? I wouldn't bet my life savings on that one.

Or, was the position needed.

If the position was really needed then likely they could have hired someone experienced so it sure looks bad. However if the argument is truly about the position, the whole attack on the guy is irrelevant. The story and the whining all over the net by the left has been about the guy - not about the position...except when they want to try to get the union deal in there. It can't logically be both however.

You really don't get it CAD? We're attacking Walker because he says teachers making 50k after decades of experience are overpaid to the point that their rights to organize should be taken away, yet here he is appointing a donor's son with no degree, knowledge, or experience even related to environmental regulation to an $81k job?

You want to make government better? Start with the incompetent overpaid appointees who aren't subject to the bureaucracy which sets pay grades and responsibilities strictly based on qualifications.

It would be nice if conservatives would admit that Walker cares as much about cutting the budget and being fiscally responsible as Saint Reagan.

The whole charade was meant to weaken the other team. Pure and simple.

I have already been talking about that since I was corrected earlier when I said it could have been a "raise" after a probationary period. Instead if was pointed out that this was a new post that was created and he was assigned to it. The new post had a higher pay grade and he got it. So there was no "raise" for the original job he was hired for. Hence the faux outrage of some of the posts even after this was pointed out is kind of silly.

No surprise the Republicans are implementing more "hecka of job Brownie" government. To a Republican, the government is nothing more than a get rich scheme. There will be more Governor Walkers to come. Low rent rubes with greedy ideology desperately seeking the scraps of their moneyed hero lords. Somebody tell Walker you're suppose to be a statesman, not some chump looking to catch a private jet flight on Koch's dime.

You seriously want to posit that the left criticizing leftists for not being further left is an asset dissimilar to anything possessed by the right . . .

There are some who are definitely left (Jonks and Throckmorton spring to mind, but there are others) who are willing to criticize those on the left for bad behavior and, much more importantly, to admit that the left is sometimes wrong on an issue. But certainly that ability is not any more common on the left than on the right.

This was pretty much it. The Neo-Neo-Cons are nothing more than wolves in sheep clothing. They prattle on about cutting budgets but in reality they mean to cut the budgets for the OTHER PEOPLE and help their friends out.

How anybody could defend giving an uneducated, inexperienced, DUI-loser, a job paying $85k while beating the hell out of the "overpaid" unions is beyond stupidity.

It doesn't surprise me that the usual crowd is doing it though. I'm sure Spidey will defend Walker to death, if only because Spidey's wife is an overpaid government worker. Yet again, he doesn't give a shit about anybody else, as long as he gets his own.

I don't get the correlation between someone who works for a private company and someone who works for the citizens of Wisconsin.

With all due respect to the people talking about getting hired for a job without having a degree or experience, I don't really care to hear about it. How much money a private company pays you, or pays anybody else for that matter, is strictly up to the management of the company. If they want to pay you a million dollars per year, that is perfectly fine with me. On the other hand, when it comes to State workers, the citizens of Wisconsin are picking up the cost of the payroll for State employees and a lot of us taxpayers are not real happy about paying this person.

Hiring an unskilled worker may turn out to be a good thing for a private company, or it may turn out to be a bad thing, but that is the chance the company takes. So if hiring unqualified people works out OK for the company you work for, that is great, I am happy for you and the company you work for. But if it is all the same to you, I would prefer the people working for this State, especially those people in positions of power, to be qualified for the job they hold. It is not my job to hire these people, and I certainly can't fire them, so I have no choice but to depend upon the people in power to appoint someone who is qualified to these positions. When you have a Governor who pulls this kind of crap, it leaves a pretty bad taste in your mouth. How can anyone with any sense at all NOT be against this?

No, you clearly don't understand the union situation - most on the left seem to think it's an attack on teachers when it is nothing of the sort. So until you understand the union situation there is no way for you to understand how you can't use it here.

Ok, I agree - as long as you look at everyone across the board - not just when you need mud to fling at a guy you hate.

Nice job making a mountain out of a molehill libtards. Guess what - Gov. Walker changed his mind! Obviously there is nothing wrong going on here.

The son of a prominent lobbyist is being demoted following controversy over his selection as a high-paid supervisor in the Walker administration.
Gov. Walker on Tuesday announced he was sending Brian Deschane back to the Department of Regulation and Licensing and his $64,728-a-year job as bureau director of board services.

The Department of Commerce recently hired Deschane, 27, as its new administrator of environmental and regulatory services — an $81,500 a year job that supervises 76 employees and oversees storage tank regulations and environmental cleanups.

Deschane never graduated college and according to his resume, had no discernible experience in the field. Yet, according to documents provided to the State Journal Tuesday,he was chosen over a former DRL secretary to replace a 25-year state employee with a degree in chemical engineering and a resume that included extensive management and regulatory experience. The disparity has led critics to conclude that Deschane's hiring was political payback.
