Be interesting to see the price tag on that engine.
Ram has offered a diesel in it's half ton truck for a year or two, I've never seen one on the road.

If the diesel gets the EPA rating it will be a huge improvement over the real world mileage of the Ecoboost 2.7L and especially the 3.5L. The Ecoboost engines do amazing off the boost but put your foot into em at all and your in the mid teen's.

The F150 Diesel should be an excellent RV tow vehicle as well.

90% of them will be 4 door short bed SUV's that never tow anything heavier than a row boat.

Maybe. It is still a 1/2 ton. There is a certain point where a 3/4 ton make better sense when towing north of 9k or 10k pounds.

Should be pretty solid and will likely get the mileage they are shooting for and likely even better on the highway in real life.

Have a 2014 Audi Q7 with a similar Diesel engine mated with a 8spd and we easily get 30mpg on the highway on trips with a 5400lb vehicle packed to the gills. I really don’t love Diesel engines, but in a truck application where functionality is most important...they excel.

Sounds cool, but I could never use all that capability.

4 cylinder diesel F150? That would so perfect.

Considering F-250 Diesels are like the gold standard of longevity and reliability, Ford must have made sure this engine is supremely rock solid.

Thing is, the mid teens is what the 5.0 gets..... so you have the option of the power OR the economy at your fingertips. It'd be neat if Ford gave you a button that locked the acceleration down to a certain level to really help fuel economy.

I'm interested in 1. I have a 2014 3.5L that I tow my 6200lb trailer with and it doesn't break a sweat. But I was hoping for more engine braking going downhill. Anyone have an opinion on how different the engine braking would be between the two? Also, when towing, I only get about 9 mpg. so this would be a big improvement. I don't know much about diesels in general.

Yes and hopefully they will offer it in work truck trims. Not Texas mega ranch edition with 20" chrome rims
Those almost always have to be ordered around here.

I thought the Cummins that Ram uses set the bar?

Maybe for retail. Fleet vehicles for municipalities and construction companies are almost all Ford Diesels. I do hear that the cummins is really nice and also GMC makes a nice 2500 if you want a boathauler or something.

Diesel engines don't really engine brake unless they have an exhaust/jake brake installed.

Lariat and up for retail. Fleet of course can get whatever they want.

I have a lightweight bunkhouse Travel Trailer. GVW is like 3800lbs. I was seriously looking at at canyon diesel but with two kids its just not big enough for me. This is the perfect gap filler for a person like me that wants a full size truck with a diesel without the 65K pricetag and size of a 3/4 ton.

Real world performance will be interesting to see.

Bah, what exactly is the target audience for that truck? Weekend warriors that want to be tonka tough going to home depot, but still want leather wrapped door handles? Is this some gimmick for fleet fuel economy?

HAHAHA.... wait that must be sarcasm... Fleets use ford because they are cheaper. I have put a few 100 000s on 350s and have seem more turbos and injectors replaced that i can count. We have switched to chevy because of the maintenance cost for the emissions systems on the Fords.

the cummins and the duramax engines are better than the ford. the allison in the GM trucks is the best trans with Dodge being the worst, I don't here of many transmission problems with the fords either. Ford still has a solid axle in the front and will probably take the most suspension abuse, but the chevy handles/drives the best of the 3.

I mean if you think that fleet uses Ford because they are cheaper up front but they aren't able to calculate the long term cost of ownership then I don't know what to tell you. I wouldn't put it past the municipalities but for-profit entities also primarily use Ford diesels in mid-size pickups.

Some of the value could be residual from fleet sell offs and Ford carry their value better because of their brand and not their truck, but still, Ford would hurt their brand value by making a crappy F-150 diesel.

I have the 5.0 and get 9 to 10 towing. Average 16 around town... Best I got on the highway was 22 - but I only saw that happen once. Only 34k on truck and now I'm happy if I'm 19Mpg on hwy.

The diesel will probably get slightly better MPG towing that what we have now.

I don't think I've ever gotten more than about 18mpg. I'm hovering at 16.7 right now. I've seen guys on other forums post 20+mpgs. I have no idea how that's accomplished other than them turtling around.

I am interested in real world. If Ford has come out and said at least 30mpg before the official ratings have come out they must feel pretty good about hitting that number or doing even better than that. Would be a major letdown if they didn't now.
Only bummer is no exhaust brake. Not a huge deal for me in flatland MI, but if i tow the camper out west or south, sure would be nice to have that. Crazy that its not in there, GM uses software to very the turbo vanes if i'm not mistaken to make it work on the Colorado. Thats a switch and some software for a nice little benefit.

Im obviously quite interested in it. If it actually does 30 on the highway, its very worthwhile for me as that would be nearly double where i am right now.

Tail wind... And probably not a supercrew. I only put about 6k a year on mine with about 3k of that towing. So I'm not commuting in it and chewing gas daily. Extra MPG would be great, but I can wait another few years to decide if I'm going 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck for the next tow pig. At some point the trailers are getting larger and heavier for us and a 1/2 ton even with a diesel is too light weight for comfort.
