I got back a 64 that I lent out to my friend for a while, so now I have 320 as opposed to just 256. Should I keep it like this? It's all running PC100 (the 64 is PC66 is and the 256 is PC133).

Hm.. er, I wonder if the 256 stick would end up running at 66MHz instead of 133MHz since you're putting them together..

Anyone?

no it wouldn't..

if you had the PC66 stick overclocked, that is.

many PC66 sticks come with 10 nanosecond chips which means that the chips are good up to 100, so you can run them at 100mhz without worries (I had one like that).

the RAM runs as fast as the clock cycle you put it as, so if you put your brand spanking new PC133 sdram (which means a minimum of 133mhz capability), on with PC100 RAM, and ran it at 100mhz, you'd effectively only have 320 megs of PC100 SDRAM. same thing if you lower things down to 66mhz, you'd effectively have PC66 ram.

Well, then that's assuming purplecow's old 64MB PC66 will be able to O/C to 100MHz, then he'll be able to lower the 256MB stick down to PC100 without problems.

But then again, a 128MB stick right now is like $35 Canadian, so why not just get that?

Normally, I'm a HUGE fan of more memory. But to tell you the truth, I didn't see much improvement going from 256meg to 512meg, so I doubt you will see anything with the extra 64megs. Of course, with memory as cheap as it is, you can ALWAYS use more memory!!! *grin*

purplecow: Can you run the 256 at 133? If so, that's the answer right there..

But if you're slowing your system down with the extra 64, don't worry about it. I took out a 64 that was slowing my system down (only cas 3 from cas 2) and ran with 256 and didn't notice any difference, but I don't use a whole lot of memory all the time.
