Difference between generic and name brand ram?

I put 128MB of Mushkin PC133 cas 2 ram in my computer but paid alot for the name and peace of mind. I am now building a budget system for someone as cheap as possible and don't know how safe it is to just put in the cheapest stuff/value ram I can find. What should I get and what is the difference? Thanks

Not really sure, but the expensive ones are a bit more stable for me, expecially under the stress of overclocking.

The cheapest "Mixed" chip memory modules aren't a great idea. They work, but you then hope the memory specs are followed by the chip manufacturs.

Currently, just buy from Crucial/Micron directly, the memory is very cheap, and known to be of good to excellent quality.

My KT7 wouldn't run stable with generic ram. I replaced about everything before I replaced the ram with Muskin cas2 and all the problems vanished. I'm a believer.

Go with crucial memory. www.crucial.com. Do not waste money on generic. It is a waste of time. Trust me I know, my company sells generic. You do not want the hassle.

McQualude is right. In my experiences, generic ram tends to not be very potent.

You may be running 128 MB RAM, bit it's not really acting as a name brand stick of 128 would.

Got 256 MB Generic RAM. No problems with it.
