difference between P4 and Celeron?

i've been thinking of getting a labtop, and i've seen lots and lots of celeron labtops on sale, but i'm not totally sure wats the diff between a p4 and a celeron, can anyone explain?

P4 > Celeron

Basically.

Celeron is a cripplied P4, half the bus, half the cache, normally a little cooler and probably less power consumption.

However, the cons outweight the pros.

Get the P4 if you can.

it's obvious that P4 > Celeron, but p4 is obviously more expensive

does anyone know a site where they compare the P4 and celeron side by side?

Alternatively, if you're ok with HP/Compaq laptops, they carry XP-M chips. Almost as power efficient as the Pentium M and almost as fast for a lot less money. I'd say even better than the P4-M. And with HP/Compaq AMD laptops so cheap, it's worth considering if that's the brand you were already looking at.

The only difference is speed. Since even a celeron 1.8 is much faster than you need for business applications you can buy based on the other features like the drives, screen, and networking capabilities.

If you are looking for a gaming laptop then P4 vs. celeron still isn't the real issue, it's what graphics chip is in the laptop. intel "extreme" or other shared memory = good luck playing any recent 3D games except maybe at 640x480 with the lowest settings. For gaming you need to be looking for something with a Radeon 9600 or Geforce 5700 chip. These will be in expensive P4 systems not cheap celerons.

only a few laptop manufacturers have the mobile version of the celeron. toshiba does, others may use desktop versions with only 128k of cache....

The majority of Celeron's I have seen are the mobile version.

I have a Compaq laptop with a 1.5 ghz celeron and a 32mg Radeon 7500 mobile graphics card. It plays games great. I'm Currently playing Max Payne 2, Call Of Duty and XIII.
