Differences between ATX and mATX

Hi,

I'm considering building a fast mATX system as I don't really need many PCI slots except maybe 1 for a sound card, and I'm not really bothered about overclocking.
I just wanted to know what are the main differences between ATX and mATX? Is it just overclocking, expandability and SLI/Xfire? Or do ATX boards generally run faster than mATX boards?
I'm considering a Foxconn G9657MA with an E6600 and 7900GS.

Thanks

i would have to say the main difference is the size. matx is obviously smaller in dimension. they tend to lack some features of the larger atx motherboards.
also, it seems like a lot more matx motherboards seem to come with some form of integrated graphics.

Well, up to 12"x9.6" rectangle

vs

9.6"x9.6" square

mATX is smaller and usually has less overclocking/power-user options. ATX boards tend to perform better but the difference is not really noticeable if paired with a solid mATX board.

Yeah it seems like lately mATX have really been able to compete with full ATX as far as features and overclockability. For example the nVidia 6100 based AMD mobos overclock better than many full-sized nF4 and nF5 boards. If you buy a good boards, I think the only stuff you'll be losing are very high-end features, such as SLI and XFire.

Why did you have to post the same question in two forums? Just build your mATX system and be happy.

JackCarver if you don't ask you won't recieve. Good Job for wanting to know more! So far i agree with everyones assesments about the differences between ATX and mATX. i hear you on the sound card, just about every mobo regardless of form factor needs a sound card as on board audio does not cut it for audiophiles. However you should also consider adding a pci card to your mobo to give you more usb 2.0 ports. you may want to consider moving to X1950 as the fan on this card is pushed further to the back where it can get some better air versus the 7900. i know personally, i have a 7900Gs from BFG, damn good card but tight fit and i had to loose the USB 2.0 card for proper ventilation for the 7900. While i am using a Biostar TForce 6100 s939 board, not many mATX are good OverClockers, but this board is. while many full atx board are (not all) and you have more PCI slots to add cards in as well.

Thanks for all the answers - they are very helpful.
I will look into the X1950, catalysts - I know it is as good as the 7900GS and about the same price.

There is a difference but not much if you aren't a professional gamer. The small form factor has its own advantages
