Im upgrading a friends Note 3 to a Note 5, or at least that was what I was waiting to do once the note 5 was released. Now im not so sure. Basically she uses the phone to take pics of everything. No games, no nothing, just pictures. Anyways, besides a curved screen and a higher price tag is there anything that really separates these two phones.

I doubt it will have a higher price tag, it should be priced similarly or cheaper than the Note5, it doesn't have an S-pen and the display is 1080p not 1440p. Unless the rumors have changed again. Or you're talking about the S6 edge+ in which case it's just more expensive for the curve and kinda pointless for most people unless they love gimmicks.

The Note 5 does not have a curved screen. It doesn't have a micro SD slot, and you can't replace the battery (back doesn't come off).

The camera on the Note 5 is fantastic. It's the best camera I've seen and used on a mobile phone. Your friend will love the shortcut to bring up the camera too (double tap home button).

Umm I'm not sure the top of the line flagship is really needed for someone who just takes photos.

Assuming you're referring to the S6 Edge + or the Note 5, you've identified the difference. If she doesn't use the S-pen, the the Note 5's extra features are a bit wasted. However it is cheaper and more comfortable to hold. If she thinks the Edge screen is cool, then I suppose that's a reason to get it. Otherwise between the two phones, it seems like she should get whatever is cheaper.

However - if all she cares about is the camera and nothing else (as long as it's fine), the G4 or regular S6 camera is just as good and will be much cheaper. The iPhone 6S will also likely have a class leading camera, though will be at the price point of the Note 5.

she is used to the note 3 and likes it so I plan on just keeping her in the note family, or at least the samsung family.

What's good about the Note 5 is the camera. I love its quality and how it works. It has one of the best cameras if your friend really love taking pictures.

I have had my edge 6+ for about a week now coming from a Note 4...the camera was definitely improved...much faster and the picture quality seems better (on visual glances of outdoor photos that I have taken so far)...

In your opinion, is the whole "edge" screen useful in any way, shape or form?

Or is it more gimmick?

For me it is a gimmick and I don't see it being much more than that...I haven't even set the different color ring tones for favorite callers yet...

I chose it over the Note 5 because it was noticeably lighter and I didn't use the s-pen that much on the note 3 or 4...

it is definitely sleeker looking as well...

It's useful in being totally sexypants.

And unfortunately, due to market segmentation, you *do* need to get a flagship for the best pictures. I guess you *could* get your friend the G4 instead... LGs usually drop price faster, and it's been out for a while.

Since Samsung used to make so many different models of phones, why not offer an extra Galaxy Note with a removable battery & microsd slot (without premium materials)?
