Different races, different tippers.

I work as a part time waiter at a fairly nice Asian resturaunt. We have a piano player Sunday nights through Thursday nights. And we have a jazz band with singers friday and Saturday nights. The resturaunt is pretty upscale compared to most restuarunts in the area. Anyways, after a year of working there, I have come to these conclusions about people.

In general: You can tell what kinds of tippers they are gonna be by what they drink. If they ask for water immediately or hot tea (which is free), you're gonna get a cheap as$ tip. The way I see it, if you're gonna hold back when it comes to dining out, whats the point of going out to eat in the first place. Anyways....

Generally speaking:

White people: They act snobby when dining out and they usually try to act like a big shot. Overall, they tip the best.

Black people: They come in and order the cheapest most common entree, like Fried Rice. They are very cheap tippers and a lot of times, they order 2 or 3 entress between 5 people. Oh yea, they always drink water.

Indian people: These are the worst. Usually, when a black table comes in, all of us waiters/waitresses are like "SH!T" but when we get an Indian table, it's all downhill from there. They'll all drink water (no ice), and order a couple entrees for everyone to share. Then they'll call you over to the table for extra chili sauce, and they'll ask for this and that. And when it comes to the check, they tip the worst, in fact, they are the cheapest people I know of.

Asian people: They will usually drink water and they will share a few entress between a small village 90% of the time. The wont ever tip more than 15% and usually it's a lot less than that.

Hmm...I would say I get water more often than not, but still tip %20 usually.

I tip 20% depending on service and quality. If waitstaff only comes to my table to get my order then once to give me my food, prolly going to get 10%. The best I have given out is 50% because the waitress earned it.

I seldom tip less than 15%, usually tip extra at lunch since it's usually only like $10, and juice the bartenders so they remember me and pour heavy

My wife and i drink water, not to save money, but because we like to drink it over anything else. plus we do not have to worry about the taset of the drink overpowering any food we are enjoying. And we always tip based on the level of service we get. We start out at 20% and go up or down from there.

Excellent service can equal as much as a 75% tip. Poor service can equal a 1 penny tip.

Keep our glasses full, deliver the food hot, check back from time to time, talk to us. flirt with my son, and you will be tipped in kind. Ignore me after bring the food, and your tip will start down hill very fast.

LOL too funny. An indian guy i work with has been in the US for four years and that guy STILL Fvcking drinks room temperature drinks. Damnit, it's better cold. He drinks juce boxes he keeps in CUBOARDS. I'm like WHAT THE HELL. This is America, baby. Fridges. HELLO!!!!!!!

Oh BTW Myself and mrsskoorb share drinks. In the US they're all free refills. I'm going to take advantage of that

I get bad service because young asians have the stereotype of tipping crappy. Because I get bad service, I usually tip very little. Tis a viscious cycle.

that is true. i am a waiter too, so i am biased and jealous.
maybe when i get a real job i'll quit bitching.

I'll play from the other side....

1. Its how it typically works - Indians always eat family style.
2. Most Indians don't eat as much as the local folk. I know its a massive generalization - but bear with me here, its the truth. The portions here are insane - and the waistlines\ of the population is showing that. Since they can't finish an entree - why waste the food - just share it. I think it makes perfect sense to go to an Asian restaurant with a group of 4 people for example and only order 3 dishes.
3. Indians like their food spicy - so they ask for hot sauce, you are tending to the table, whats the problem here? If you know they are going to need a good amount of it, why not just provide them with a larger quantity the first time?

I do agree however, that they may tip "lighter" than most.... not sure what to do about that....

15% default, and you have to a really bad job to get me to 10%. But if you're even a little bit nice or I can tell you're paying attention, then it's an easy 20%

"Lighter"......NO, they tip horribly. So bad sometimes I just want to throw it back in their faces and say dont come back.

What's the point of tipping 20%? Let alone 15%? Heck why tip 10%? Waiters avg like $22/hour...for taking your order and carrying food...anyone else find that BS?!

waiters average 2.50 an hour.
we average ~20-25 for around two hours A DAY during dinner time on the weekends.
during downtimes, you make $0.

Then get a job as a waiter. If you want to be a cheap as$, order take out or eat at Taco Bell. And it's not an easy job. It's fast paced and you have a lot running through you head that you have to remember. Most people wouldnt last a day in a fast paced resturaunt.

I always get water, because the iced tea is never sweetened and I don't do carbonated drinks nor alcoholic drinks. Know what's funny? Everytime I say "just water", I actually think to myself... the waiter thinks I'm cheap... honestly I do.

Wrong. Stats were based on total avg of all waiters. Money made divide by hours worked.
