Then get a job as a waiter. If you want to be a cheap as$, order take out or eat at Taco Bell. And it's not an easy job. It's fast paced and you have a lot running through you head that you have to remember. Most people wouldnt last a day in a fast paced resturaunt.

I'm not saying it's an easy job. It's unskilled. No education required. Blah blah blah. Anyone can do it. Waiters have no business making an avg of $40,000+ a year.

once again it proves WAITRESSES gets better tips
what a sexist world we live in.

if i get a hot waiter with good service, i tip more.

if the waitress provided good service, i'd also tip accordingly.

When you say water....we think "Oh god, here's a cheap as$ who is going to give me a crappy tip." And we wont pay much attention to you for the rest of the night. No carbonated drinks, no iced tea, and no alcohol. So what do you drink? Juice, milk, and water?

1. Its how it typically works - Indians always eat family style.
2. Most Indians don't eat as much as the local folk. I know its a massive generalization - but bear with me here, its the truth. The portions here are insane - and the waistlines\ of the population is showing that. Since they can't finish an entree - why waste the food - just share it. I think it makes perfect sense to go to an Asian restaurant with a group of 4 people for example and only order 3 dishes.
3. Indians like their food spicy - so they ask for hot sauce, you are tending to the table, whats the problem here? If you know they are going to need a good amount of it, why not just provide them with a larger quantity the first time?

I do agree however, that they may tip "lighter" than most.... not sure what to do about that....

Just my 2 cents....

"Lighter"......NO, they tip horribly. So bad sometimes I just want to throw it back in their faces and say dont come back.

thats funny, i usually tip %15 but for you i'll live an ass penny
don't come back? like I should give a crap, there are tons of resturants in every area, hell i bet you can see one from INSIDE yours

waiters average 2.50 an hour.
we average ~20-25 for around two hours A DAY during dinner time on the weekends.
during downtimes, you make $0.

Wrong. Stats were based on total avg of all waiters. Money made divide by hours worked.

Wrong. I suppose it depend on company policies.

My mother is a waitress Darden (Olive Garden/Reb Lobster/Bahama Breeze, etc), she has to give the busser some of the tip, as well as the bartenders, but everything other than that, is what she earned. She doesn't split it with other waiters.

As a full time college student, working two days a week averaged $20+ an hour is awesome. It's not that were unskilled, it's that were smart.

I guess my only complaint is that because I am Asian, waiters automatically assume I will tip bad so when I receive crappy service, I give a crappy tip, and the cycle repeats...

I seriously had the worst waiter ever once and I left a quarter.

I don't know how to take that... my wife always gets a coke... what kinda service does that get us ?

So if 90% of the water-ordering people indeed do give crappy tips, what about the 10% of us who will give 15-20% regardless ? We get the same kinda shafty service to start ? Perfect.

i am tired of getting bad service lately. It's as if waiters think they deserve to be tipped, and don't deliver service on par with what i expect. I guess it's because of the job market, the businesses hire anyone that wants to wait tables.
You get what your worth, if your good you'll make money, if your not, maybe you should think of finding another profession.
I have no sympathy for someone that wants to work as a waiter, so don't feed us the it's such a hard job and we only make 2.50 an hour and we have to claim at least 8% and if we don't make the tips, it comes out of our pockets. If it's that big of an issue, get a real job.

waiting is a job, noone is forced to do it.

BTW, i waited tables for 5 years, while also bartending for a major rest. chain. I look back and realize that i will never do that again. I am past it, and happy to be.

And if you don't like it, i wish the worst weeds dreams upon you at night.

what about benefits and vacation? not that great

you know your AVERAGE waitstaff have to work on ALL major holidays, depending on your restaurant, you might get out on thanksgiving.

unskilled? you would be suprised the knowledge you are required to have as a waiter.
i suppose if you want to wait tables at double T, then yes, everybody and their mother can do it.

I think it depends on the type of restuaraunt you work for. I work for a family owned resturaunt and I know it's very different than a chain resturaunt from what I've heard and compared.

another thing about you poor poor souls who take the job of waiting tables. Don't give me the sob story of being put in such a position with no way out. You know damn well you have an equal chance of making out way above the minimum as you do barely making anything. Waiters take these jobs because it varies and you can come out like a gangbuster. That's why you bust your @$$ (most of the time) and take crap from customers. When you gamble, you don't always win. You want stability, do something else. Where's soylentgreen and his stories ?

when i was a waiter...i was averaging about 120-150 for a 4-5 hour shift. it all depends on the people and if you get regulars or not. man, regulars can tip like crazy, especially when you know what they want before they sit down.... like "new castle for you sir, and a house white for you mam?" kind of thing.

i do agree with the op, indian people just don't tip and i truely believe it's part of their culture. i think they see it as our job to do serve them so they dont' see any point in tipping large or tipping at all.

you see, asian people got it down! you ever go to a real sh!t hole asian restaurant, goddamn the service is horrible, but peole come back like crazy! they don't care about good or bad service, if they got good food, people will come back!

WTF is wrong with you people?

What's wrong with making a living waiting tables?

Seriously, your arguments don't make sense. So it's "unskilled" - so what, YOU wouldn't do it, would you? And SOMEONE has to.

I mean, if you were to stop paying everybody for work that didn't involve a college degree, exactly how long do you think the country would last before collapsing in on itself?

we have to tell our relatives who come from Hong Kong that it is customary to tip here in the states. They would get up leaving nothing and think nothing of it otherwise.

Who here is sobbing about being stuck with no way out. Im a college student doing the waiter-thing two days a week. Even with all these accusations and assumptions about poor tippers, I still average double or more what most retail stores will pay the average student.

i wasn't talking about you otherwise I would've quoted you... there've been too many of those types crying about it here.. and I named one.

BTW, you still didn't answer my question about my wife and the coke...

To answer yours... I love apple juice... got 4 gallons in my fridge right now...

No offense, but I don't feel bad. I've been working as a programmer/engineer in a fairly big biotech company for the last 1.5-2years as a contractor. The hourly rate kinda sucks, basically no benefits, 40 hrs of vacation time after 1500 hrs worked. I've taken 3 days off the entire time I've been there. The reason I'm still there is because I was unemployed for a year after my masters and I should be offered a salaried job next quarter (knock on wood).

Oh yeah , I have a masters in Computer Science, and my undergrand I majored in chemistry/comp sci.

I'm not trying to bitch, but basically you are still serving food---it's not ROCKET SCIENCE.
