i usually tip around 18%.

i also happen to like water with asian (chinese/thai/japanese) cuisine. and it seems like you base your service on the type of drink they order. I'd have tipped my normal 18%, but since I'd order water, and you'd think you'd get a bad tip from me and not provide me with good service, i'd actually tip you 10% or lower....depending on how bad your service was.

see how that works?

you know your AVERAGE waitstaff have to work on ALL major holidays, depending on your restaurant, you might get out on thanksgiving.

unskilled? you would be suprised the knowledge you are required to have as a waiter.
i suppose if you want to wait tables at double T, then yes, everybody and their mother can do it.

No offense, but I don't feel bad. I've been working as a programmer/engineer in a fairly big biotech company for the last 1.5-2years as a contractor. The hourly rate kinda sucks, basically no benefits, 40 hrs of vacation time after 1500 hrs worked. I've taken 3 days off the entire time I've been there. The reason I'm still there is because I was unemployed for a year after my masters and I should be offered a salaried job next quarter (knock on wood).

Oh yeah , I have a masters in Computer Science, and my undergrand I majored in chemistry/comp sci.

I'm not trying to bitch, but basically you are still serving food---it's not ROCKET SCIENCE.

This is going to be good......hide.

Hehe, I still said earlier I tip 20%, but they really they need to either include the tip automatically into the bill (say 10-15%) and you give them more for EXCEPTIONAL service. "Tip" is a misnomer, it is expected.

My above quote was to show for those who think they have it "bad" there is someone who has it as bad or worse (I am not saying I have it the worst or anything, don't get me wrong).

I am sure waiting is hard work, but so is a lot of other things.

dude, it's rocket science if you don't got any social skills whatsoever. some people just don't get it when it comes to social skills. it's not about kissing ass or being 'there' all the time. it's about reading people, knowing what they want, and knowing when to back off.

answer the damned question straight... do you shaft the 10% (fabricated figure for the purposes of proving a point) of the water-ordering people who DO tip well also ? Looks like it... seem fair to them ?

i didn't read through the bickering.. but to the OP... damn that's some harsh stereotyping. All I know is, if you've been a waiter/waitress, then you instantly tip 20, unless the service was just absolutely horrid.

And for the record, i get a water when I order first off. And I tip at LEAST 20%. Yes, I have friends who are servers and I know what it's like.

I am indian, I tip based on what service received. I have left a 25 percent tip to a 2 percent tip depending on how the waiter/waitress was.

For example today my gf and i ate at houlihans, I asked for no parmesian cheese in my pasta, it came with parmesian cheese. Our drinks werent filled when they were finished, the waitress forgot to get us plates when our appetizer arrived. Also she seemed slow doing everything even when taking our order. I was done with my pasta, by the time she came over and asked "how it is?" and it was impossible to flag her down.

I dont really agree on the concept of tipping (i know thats how waiters and waitress get paid), but I do it becasue society forces it upon me. Why should I have to pay the waitress when i am already paying 20 bucks for pasta.. She didnt help me choose my meal, or give me important advice about the food. I could have very well picked it up my self. Why am i the one that is responsible to make sure the waiter is paid? Though i dont agree with it, i still tip ~15-20 percent usually

Well, it is customary in America. If you dont want to embrace America's harmless customs, you should move out of the country.

you dont have to tip if you really don't want to. u know, i've waited tables long enough to see everything that can possibly happened. you tip based on service, if you dont' want to tip then don't. if you don't want to feel pressured into tipping but still want restaurant qualitity food then order out.

I drink like 4 or 5 cups of water at meals and always only drin kwater. If the waiter is not htere with refills after I tell him the first time he's getting only 15% from me. If you're refilling my water consistently you'll get tipped well...

Went to a restaurant to have dinner with a few friends.. wasnt too impressed with the service and hence gave a 5 % tip... The waiter wasnt too happy and followed me to my car and wanted to know the reason why i didnt give him a good tip..... i can tell u that we didnt have a very pleasant conversation...

AFter that experience, i make sure i give a tip of atleast 10 % to avoid any hassles....

no, im not denying it.
i should also mention that im 23. i think its the older indians who tip less. my uncle is filthy rich (CPA with his own practice). he took a bunch of us out (~15 people) for mr cousin's bday to Chilli's. We went in real late (around 9pm) and they seated us and the waitress busted her ass to get us our food quickly and whatnot. When the check came and a 18% gratuitity was added automatically, my uncle started making a scene as to why its 18% and ot 15%!! Waitress took the check back and took off 3%. I felt so bad for the waitress...i left her extra $10 on the table

Joking about the "pok guy"s, etc. Anyways, like I said, I work in a fairly upscale restuarunt compared to the mass chain resturaunts like TGIF's and Applebees and whatever else there is out there. Now, I consider those two chain resturaunts, among many others to be cheap resturaunts where ordering a coke or even water might be acceptable. But the resturaunt I work at is very nice and the majority of people that come in are those trying to impress business clients or Significant others. We dont cater to families, in fact we try to deter them from entering our resturaunt when they come in to be seated. They'll ask for a high chair and we say "No, we dont have them", and then we'll sit them at the table closest to the door. My point is that in this resturaunt, it is normal to order a bottle of wine or drinks from our full bar. The ambiance is very relaxed yet upscale. There are table clothes, dim lights, paino players, and jazz bands, and candle lights. Now, in that kind of environment, why order water or a coke?

so how many buffet tables you got? i consider 5 tables to be upscale. if you got 4 and a do it yourself sushi bar, thats about the same.

why judge a guy by his choice of beverage ? Maybe that's all he prefers... it's just a damned drink. Are all water-drinkers only ordering it because it's free ? No. Are all water-drinkers cheap@$$es ? No. That's the bottom line.

i usually tip around 18%.

i also happen to like water with asian (chinese/thai/japanese) cuisine. and it seems like you base your service on the type of drink they order. I'd have tipped my normal 18%, but since I'd order water, and you'd think you'd get a bad tip from me and not provide me with good service, i'd actually tip you 10% or lower....depending on how bad your service was.

see how that works?

Well, thank you very much for your generousity. But most of you do tip poorly. Dont deny it.
answer the damned question straight... do you shaft the 10% (fabricated figure for the purposes of proving a point) of the water-ordering people who DO tip well also ? Looks like it... seem fair to them ?

Joking about the "pok guy"s, etc. Anyways, like I said, I work in a fairly upscale restuarunt compared to the mass of chain resturaunts like TGIF's and Applebees and whatever else there is out there.

I have ordered a coke or water at a upscale restaurant in NYC... I am there with my gf and I dont need to impress her. I want to have a quiet, good meal and eat/drink what I WANT, even if its a coke or water.
