I always get water, because the iced tea is never sweetened and I don't do carbonated drinks nor alcoholic drinks. Know what's funny? Everytime I say "just water", I actually think to myself... the waiter thinks I'm cheap... honestly I do.
When you say water....we think "Oh god, here's a cheap as$ who is going to give me a crappy tip." And we wont pay much attention to you for the rest of the night. No carbonated drinks, no iced tea, and no alcohol. So what do you drink? Juice, milk, and water?
indian here.
i usually tip around 18%.
i also happen to like water with asian (chinese/thai/japanese) cuisine. and it seems like you base your service on the type of drink they order. I'd have tipped my normal 18%, but since I'd order water, and you'd think you'd get a bad tip from me and not provide me with good service, i'd actually tip you 10% or lower....depending on how bad your service was.
see how that works?
Well, thank you very much for your generousity. But most of you do tip poorly. Dont deny it.
answer the damned question straight... do you shaft the 10% (fabricated figure for the purposes of proving a point) of the water-ordering people who DO tip well also ? Looks like it... seem fair to them ?
Joking about the "pok guy"s, etc. Anyways, like I said, I work in a fairly upscale restuarunt compared to the mass of chain resturaunts like TGIF's and Applebees and whatever else there is out there. Now, I consider those two chain resturaunts, among many others to be cheap resturaunts where ordering a coke or even water might be acceptable. But the resturaunt I work at is very nice and the majority of people that come in are those trying to impress business clients or Significant others. We dont cater to families, in fact we try to deter them from entering our resturaunt when they come in to be seated. They'll ask for a high chair and we say "No, we dont have them", and then we'll sit them at the table closest to the door. My point is that in this resturaunt, it is normal to order a bottle of wine or drinks from our full bar. The ambiance is very relaxed yet upscale. There are table clothes, dim lights, paino players, and jazz bands, and candle lights. Now, in that kind of environment, why order water or a coke?
