For example today my gf and i ate at houlihans, I asked for no parmesian cheese in my pasta, it came with parmesian cheese. Our drinks werent filled when they were finished, the waitress forgot to get us plates when our appetizer arrived. Also she seemed slow doing everything even when taking our order. I was done with my pasta, by the time she came over and asked "how it is?" and it was impossible to flag her down.
I dont really agree on the concept of tipping (i know thats how waiters and waitress get paid), but I do it becasue society forces it upon me. Why should I have to pay the waitress when i am already paying 20 bucks for pasta.. She didnt help me choose my meal, or give me important advice about the food. I could have very well picked it up my self. Why am i the one that is responsible to make sure the waiter is paid?
Well, it is customary in America. If you dont want to embrace America's harmless customs, you should move out of the country.
I was born in this country

you dont have to tip if you really don't want to. u know, i've waited tables long enough to see everything that can possibly happened. you tip based on service, if you dont' want to tip then don't. if you don't want to feel pressured into tipping but still want restaurant qualitity food then order out.
Went to a restaurant to have dinner with a few friends.. wasnt too impressed with the service and hence gave a 5 % tip... The waiter wasnt too happy and followed me to my car and wanted to know the reason why i didnt give him a good tip..... i can tell u that we didnt have a very pleasant conversation...
AFter that experience, i make sure i give a tip of atleast 10 % to avoid any hassles....

All upscale restaurants that I have been to provide a glass of water before you even receive the menu. It's the chains where you have to request water. BTW do you guys also avoid certain nationalities because of "their customs" and tipping?

I always get water, because the iced tea is never sweetened and I don't do carbonated drinks nor alcoholic drinks. Know what's funny? Everytime I say "just water", I actually think to myself... the waiter thinks I'm cheap... honestly I do.
When you say water....we think "Oh god, here's a cheap as$ who is going to give me a crappy tip." And we wont pay much attention to you for the rest of the night. No carbonated drinks, no iced tea, and no alcohol. So what do you drink? Juice, milk, and water?
indian here.
i usually tip around 18%.
i also happen to like water with asian (chinese/thai/japanese) cuisine. and it seems like you base your service on the type of drink they order. I'd have tipped my normal 18%, but since I'd order water, and you'd think you'd get a bad tip from me and not provide me with good service, i'd actually tip you 10% or lower....depending on how bad your service was.
see how that works?
Well, thank you very much for your generousity. But most of you do tip poorly. Dont deny it.
Joking about the "pok guy"s, etc. Anyways, like I said, I work in a fairly upscale restuarunt compared to the mass of chain resturaunts like TGIF's and Applebees and whatever else there is out there. Now, I consider those two chain resturaunts, among many others to be cheap resturaunts where ordering a coke or even water might be acceptable. But the resturaunt I work at is very nice and the majority of people that come in are those trying to impress business clients or Significant others. We dont cater to families, in fact we try to deter them from entering our resturaunt when they come in to be seated. They'll ask for a high chair and we say "No, we dont have them", and then we'll sit them at the table closest to the door. My point is that in this resturaunt, it is normal to order a bottle of wine or drinks from our full bar. The ambiance is very relaxed yet upscale. There are table clothes, dim lights, paino players, and jazz bands, and candle lights. Now, in that kind of environment, why order water or a coke?
so how many buffet tables you got? i consider 5 tables to be upscale. if you got 4 and a do it yourself sushi bar, thats about the same.

if they guy gave bad service you should've told him then and there, trust me your doing him a favor. trust me when i say this, waiters know when they're doing a bad job. but there's a difference between slacking off and juggling too many tables cause your short staffed. it's the customers who can see the difference that i'm appreciative for.

I agree completely. There is a difference between being understaffed and slacking off. And a lot of people either cant see the difference or dont pay attention.

I tip 10% normally, and will go up to 20% depending on service. One time at Sam Woo I didn't tip at all because we had crappy service, the waitress came out running asking for tip... and we ran even faster to the car btw I'm asian, so I know I'm cheap

No, not really. But if you pay attention, families and a few types of races are seated in certain areas while the better seats in the house are saved for others.

Seriously, your arguments don't make sense. So it's "unskilled" - so what, YOU wouldn't do it, would you? And SOMEONE has to.
I mean, if you were to stop paying everybody for work that didn't involve a college degree, exactly how long do you think the country would last before collapsing in on itself?
