All upscale restaurants that I have been to provide a glass of water before you even receive the menu. It's the chains where you have to request water. BTW do you guys also avoid certain nationalities because of "their customs" and tipping?

For example today my gf and i ate at houlihans, I asked for no parmesian cheese in my pasta, it came with parmesian cheese. Our drinks werent filled when they were finished, the waitress forgot to get us plates when our appetizer arrived. Also she seemed slow doing everything even when taking our order. I was done with my pasta, by the time she came over and asked "how it is?" and it was impossible to flag her down.

I dont really agree on the concept of tipping (i know thats how waiters and waitress get paid), but I do it becasue society forces it upon me. Why should I have to pay the waitress when i am already paying 20 bucks for pasta.. She didnt help me choose my meal, or give me important advice about the food. I could have very well picked it up my self. Why am i the one that is responsible to make sure the waiter is paid?

Well, it is customary in America. If you dont want to embrace America's harmless customs, you should move out of the country.

I was born in this country

owned...

im european and i generaly leave a good tip (~15%).

However that tip varies with the service perfomed really - if im paying money for someone to bring me the food and assure a pleasant dining experience, i will judge the amount based on what i get. I mean if you're horrible at something - social norms or not - simple economics will push you out of that occupation. There is no way you're entitled to the 15% tip

Oh yeah what's people wanting tip when i call in a pick up. The other week i got a burrito from a place that i go to at least once a week and the lady working the cashier handed me the reciept saying that i need to "sign it and fill out the tip". (with emphasis on the tip)

Of course i left 0 .... im sorry but you're not getting 50 cents for carrying my burrito 3 steps...

The other night my family and I went out to dinner and spent $120 on the meal. The waitress was so piss poor at her job that we left less than $10 for her, which still pads her pocket, but is only ~8%.

piss poor service is defined as follows:

drinks not filled
plates not available for appetizer, had to ask for them
food delivered prepared wrong
all entrees but one delivered, we had to wait another 10 minutes for the last one and it still wasn't prepared right
billed us for things we didn't order

because she billed us for things we didn't order, we subtracted that ourselves off of the ticket. I hope they hold her responsible for that and her tip is even less, but if not, oh well.

PS, I wasn't a waiter, but I was a delivery driver for domino's. All I have to say is if you are delivering to a trailer park or an apartment complex, you will be lucky to even get enough to cover the order.

you dont have to tip if you really don't want to. u know, i've waited tables long enough to see everything that can possibly happened. you tip based on service, if you dont' want to tip then don't. if you don't want to feel pressured into tipping but still want restaurant qualitity food then order out.

Went to a restaurant to have dinner with a few friends.. wasnt too impressed with the service and hence gave a 5 % tip... The waiter wasnt too happy and followed me to my car and wanted to know the reason why i didnt give him a good tip..... i can tell u that we didnt have a very pleasant conversation...

AFter that experience, i make sure i give a tip of atleast 10 % to avoid any hassles....

if they guy gave bad service you should've told him then and there, trust me your doing him a favor. trust me when i say this, waiters know when they're doing a bad job. but there's a difference between slacking off and juggling too many tables cause your short staffed. it's the customers who can see the difference that i'm appreciative for.

No, not really. But if you pay attention, families and a few types of races are seated in certain areas while the better seats in the house are saved for others.

I always get water, because the iced tea is never sweetened and I don't do carbonated drinks nor alcoholic drinks. Know what's funny? Everytime I say "just water", I actually think to myself... the waiter thinks I'm cheap... honestly I do.

When you say water....we think "Oh god, here's a cheap as$ who is going to give me a crappy tip." And we wont pay much attention to you for the rest of the night. No carbonated drinks, no iced tea, and no alcohol. So what do you drink? Juice, milk, and water?

indian here.
i usually tip around 18%.

i also happen to like water with asian (chinese/thai/japanese) cuisine. and it seems like you base your service on the type of drink they order. I'd have tipped my normal 18%, but since I'd order water, and you'd think you'd get a bad tip from me and not provide me with good service, i'd actually tip you 10% or lower....depending on how bad your service was.

see how that works?

Well, thank you very much for your generousity. But most of you do tip poorly. Dont deny it.
answer the damned question straight... do you shaft the 10% (fabricated figure for the purposes of proving a point) of the water-ordering people who DO tip well also ? Looks like it... seem fair to them ?

Joking about the "pok guy"s, etc. Anyways, like I said, I work in a fairly upscale restuarunt compared to the mass of chain resturaunts like TGIF's and Applebees and whatever else there is out there. Now, I consider those two chain resturaunts, among many others to be cheap resturaunts where ordering a coke or even water might be acceptable. But the resturaunt I work at is very nice and the majority of people that come in are those trying to impress business clients or Significant others. We dont cater to families, in fact we try to deter them from entering our resturaunt when they come in to be seated. They'll ask for a high chair and we say "No, we dont have them", and then we'll sit them at the table closest to the door. My point is that in this resturaunt, it is normal to order a bottle of wine or drinks from our full bar. The ambiance is very relaxed yet upscale. There are table clothes, dim lights, paino players, and jazz bands, and candle lights. Now, in that kind of environment, why order water or a coke?

so how many buffet tables you got? i consider 5 tables to be upscale. if you got 4 and a do it yourself sushi bar, thats about the same.

our most expensive drink is 125 a pop in a snifter glass.
take a wild guess at what it is.

i used to but i learned my lesson quick. you can't judge people like that when they first walk in. i'm not saying i don't cause i do. in the back of my head i'm like 'fvck' but you provide the best service you can. it's just those cases where u just don't know. plus, it depends on what type of restaurant your working at. i worked at a small family style italian/chicago deep dish pizzaria where we get alot of regulars so i don't know how it is at lets say TGIF or california pizza kitchen.

I agree completely. There is a difference between being understaffed and slacking off. And a lot of people either cant see the difference or dont pay attention.

I usually get water because I don't want anything that will make me less hungry like a coke (with all the sugar), and plus water is good for you Normally when I eat out, I get a drink and a small but good quality meal (meaning it's not too oily, fried, or mcD style cooked). I tip 10% normally, and will go up to 20% depending on service. One time at Sam Woo I didn't tip at all because we had crappy service, the waitress came out running asking for tip... and we ran even faster to the car btw I'm asian, so I know I'm cheap

What is the average tip at a fairly nice resturaunt? Id say it's 20% at the one I work at. My opinion regarding tips is obviously biased and tainted because I am a waiter. When I dine out, I usually leave at least 30%. I do the same when Im at a bar ordering a few drinks. I have a few resturaunts I go to regularly and when you come back in, they remember you and you get great service. The same goes for the bars I drink at regularly. I'll have a couple beers and the tab will be maybe $10. I'll leave $15. They remember things like that. When I go in to one bar in particluar, they usually knock off a few drinks from the tab for me. When im working, I remember those who tipped well, and I'll cater to them more than I will to others who dine in.

No, not really. But if you pay attention, families and a few types of races are seated in certain areas while the better seats in the house are saved for others.

Sorta like the back of the bus? I thought we got rid of that crap years ago. Maybe there should be an Asian sit-in at your Chinese Buffet similar to the ones in Woolworth in Mississippi...

Seriously, your arguments don't make sense. So it's "unskilled" - so what, YOU wouldn't do it, would you? And SOMEONE has to.

I mean, if you were to stop paying everybody for work that didn't involve a college degree, exactly how long do you think the country would last before collapsing in on itself?

oh thank god these positions are being filled so easily. thanks for taking jobs not everyone likes to do. thank you for taking our sh!t, cleaning our crud, kissing our azz, cuz if it wasnt for people like you, the government would force us to do manadatory waitressing, kind of like jury duty.

you just don't get it do you? no one pointed a gun to someone's head to force person to serve food for us. they didn't take that job because they are a stand up kind of guy and didn't want anyone else to get such a crappy job. your job is only worth by how many other people can do your job. and your job is not worth a lot more just because it is "hard". im sure landscaping is hard, waitressing is hard, drivng a bus is hard, does that mean they should make 50K/year because its "hard" work, and someone had a gun at there head to take the job?

if we were to stop paying for people's job that requires a degree, where would we be as well?
