Most chinese people DO order a few entrees to be shared among a group of people... that's how chinese people eat. And as far as tipping goes, my family usually goes between 15-20%.

What's wrong with making a living waiting tables?

Seriously, your arguments don't make sense. So it's "unskilled" - so what, YOU wouldn't do it, would you? And SOMEONE has to.

I mean, if you were to stop paying everybody for work that didn't involve a college degree, exactly how long do you think the country would last before collapsing in on itself?

oh thank god these positions are being filled so easily. thanks for taking jobs not everyone likes to do. thank you for taking our sh!t, cleaning our crud, kissing our azz, cuz if it wasnt for people like you, the government would force us to do manadatory waitressing, kind of like jury duty.

you just don't get it do you? no one pointed a gun to someone's head to force person to serve food for us. they didn't take that job because they are a stand up kind of guy and didn't want anyone else to get such a crappy job. your job is only worth by how many other people can do your job. and your job is not worth a lot more just because it is "hard". im sure landscaping is hard, waitressing is hard, drivng a bus is hard, does that mean they should make 50K/year because its "hard" work, and someone had a gun at there head to take the job?

if we were to stop paying for people's job that requires a degree, where would we be as well?

hey...i have a college degree...well i'm back in college now and waitering is a great job to have. man, i know some waiters in sf make around 250-300 a night not including their hourly wage.

One time at Sam Woo I didn't tip at all because we had crappy service, the waitress came out running asking for tip... and we ran even faster to the car btw I'm asian, so I know I'm cheap

My favorite is the folks who like to special order food in restaurants. They basically end up being the chef:

"I'll take the chicken romana, but instead of the veggies, I'll have a salad. Oh, and put some mushrooms on there, and put it all on top of pasta instead of the potato.

Nothing to drink, I'll have some water. Bring lots of wedges of lemon so I can make myself free lemonade."

Then, when the "special order" takes 15 minutes to make:

"Hey, I've been waiting for over half an hour. How much longer for my food?"

Uh, no you haven't been waiting half an hour. You pulled up to the restaurant a half hour ago, but you haven't waited half an hour.

The best part about this situation is that a good waiter will still know how to extract a good tip from this kind of person. I guess that's what separates a good waiter from a bad one. Treat all your tables as if they'll tip well, and all of a sudden, you'll start raking in the dough. Because that insolent, low tipping indian bastage just may invite his white boss with loads of cash to give away on his next trip back.

<-- Whitey, good tipper (20%), drinks water, has bartended and served extensively.

Because I've had the pleasure of working in the Food Service Industry, I'm quite forgiving of less than perfect service but, I'd tip you less (15%) if I thought you were giving me sub standard service based on my drink preference and nationality.

The one thing that many Americans might overlook is that people from different cultures do not always tip as a matter of course.

I?m Scottish and we tend to leave the change or ?round up? to a certain extent back home, serious tipping is normally reserved for service above and beyond the call of duty!

Some people in the US overly tip for what is often shoddy service ? many times the tipping culture just results in disinterested, or, even incompetent servers who just assume they will make their 15% without any effort.

I?m all for leaving a tip generally speaking when ?service? is actually provided ? and that does not just mean:

A. What are you drinking?
B. What are you eating?
C. Here are your dishes.

I'm looking for friendly, efficient and polite service with a good attitude - thats all

The truth is that once you get used to the US culture of tipping as a matter of course you just do it automatically and as a general rule I just leave a flat 15% and round up where applicable. Of course if the server has gone the distance that will improve but not more than say 25% overall generally.

Now that I am used to tipping I get some looks from people when I tip outside of the US with faces that say??are you nuts??

I?m currently on assignment in Israel and the expected tip is 10% - for that 10% you get non-existent service if you are lucky ? possibly 20 minutes wait time before people ask you what you?d like to eat or drink. After the meal which generally all comes out at the wrong time you would expect to wait 20 minutes before the (generally hot looking waitress..) decides to stop gazing at her cell/mobile phone and look your way. That?s if she?s not already talking on it looking the opposite way.
There are exceptions to this rule but generally speaking there is no service here ? certainly not by American standards?

Oh I forgot to say - I generally drink water also as it is a much better alternative to all that sugary or chemical soda cr@p. In Chinese restaurants I normally order hot tea - I'll always have a beer in Indians though. I am partial to a Tsing Dao in the Chinese places but you get gassed up at all those buffets...

since when did tipping became a mandatory practice? you guys think you got it hard or think waiting isnt a easy job? a few of my family members works in the back of the restaurant making just barely above minimum wage. Just because you know how to read a little english and multitask you think you deserve to get 15% and up? man give me a break even at 10% of 100 when a family of 4-6 orders about 100 bucks you're still making 10 bucks an hour on top of that you get your hourly wage. and yes you do split a percentage to to busers and the bartender (assuming it has a bar) but then again you're still making over 60% on the majority of the tip. So before you start saying people are cheap and how you base someone on how well they tip you should get yourself examined my friend. Not everyone makes 3-4000+ a month to be paying waiters for a job they should do in the first place. Simply if you don't like what you're doing no one is forcing you to do it.

Btw, I like drinking tea because it's it doesnt make my throat all dry compare to soft drinks at a restaurant.

<---- Is chinese
<---- Tips over 15% and up
<---- Has a few family member that are waiting at the tables.

Now take that snotty attitude and shove it up your ass because people work harder for their money than just provide service

i think managers should just pay the minimum wage for the wait staff so we none of will have to tip anymore. and that bull about "if waiters get minimum wage, then prices will go up" is total bullsh1t. i seriously doubt food prices are going up beyond what people should tip anyway. even if food prices do go beyond the average tip, i still think it will be worth it.

having a minimum wage and no tipping will most likely lead to better overall service.

In general: You can tell what kinds of tippers they are gonna be by what they drink. If they ask for water immediately or hot tea (which is free), you're gonna get a cheap as$ tip. The way I see it, if you're gonna hold back when it comes to dining out, whats the point of going out to eat in the first place. Anyways....

Generally speaking:

White people: They act snobby when dining out and they usually try to act like a big shot. Overall, they tip the best.

Black people: They come in and order the cheapest most common entree, like Fried Rice. They are very cheap tippers and a lot of times, they order 2 or 3 entress between 5 people. Oh yea, they always drink water.

Indian people: These are the worst. Usually, when a black table comes in, all of us waiters/waitresses are like "SH!T" but when we get an Indian table, it's all downhill from there. They'll all drink water (no ice), and order a couple entrees for everyone to share. Then they'll call you over to the table for extra chili sauce, and they'll ask for this and that. And when it comes to the check, they tip the worst, in fact, they are the cheapest people I know of.

Asian people: They will usually drink water and they will share a few entress between a small village 90% of the time. The wont ever tip more than 15% and usually it's a lot less than that.

Done.

Asian, drinks water because I like water...sometimes i'll get a drink from the bar, sometimes i'll get a glass of wine...but mainly i don't because i like water...besides its healthy....

i goto nice places all the time, and have never received sub standard service for ordering just water...always been treated with respect as i should be...anyways...i go out quite frequently to nice places in nyc, and ALWAYS tip at least 20% because most of the places i goto in ny give pretty damn good service, and im not talking about your applebees/unos/houlihans...im talking upscale places...wd50, nobu, public, craft...and so on and so forth. so stop judging people by their nationalities/drink. give everyone good service and you'll be a better person for it and get more tip money from it.

Man you hit it on the nose. BTW...sorry Black people don't like to tip...we like to handle our business, eat and get the h@$% out of there. lol  l

I take the bill amount, round it up to the nearest dollar, divide that by 10 then multiply that by 2, which is 20% or a little more.

I'm Indian and I tip 20%. But if a waiter/waitress gives me ANY attitude, it's down to 10%. Tips are a privilege, regardless of how expected it is a part of their income.

yup, i absolutely agree. tips are privleges and you get tipped according to the service you give. crap service = crap tip or NO tip at all. some people have already stated that waiters are so accustomed to getting tips nowdays, which equates to slacking off since they're expecting something already.

it's just are those few waiters AND customers who ruin it for everyone.

I've noticed that there is always a stupid tipping thread that pops up periodically. Here is your solution so no more stupid threads need to be created. If service is good tip the waiter properly. So buy a few less Itunes songs and give the waiter a few bucks. If the waiter sucks give them a penny to show they sucked.

By the way, the OP seems like an ass. He is a prime candidate for the penny tip.

So, I'm diabetic, allergic to milk and have a history of alcoholism in the family. This pretty much leaves me with water to drink. Sometimes the wife and I like to splash out on a nice meal ... but if we head to the restaurant of the OP, it sounds like I'm doomed to crap service.

If I feel the service is good, I'll tip 15-20% ... exceptional service up to 40%. If I'm given attitude, ignored, or have to wait for an inordinate amount of time, I have no problem walking out of the restaurant without leaving a tip. A good waiter/ess makes as much of a difference to my meal as the quality of the food. If someone is genuinely enjoying their job (or at least acting brilliantly), and communicates with you, banters etc., they are bound to get a good tip. If they are sullen and withdrawn, tossing the food down with a grunt, they deserve nothing. YET, the expectation is always there ... too many folk nowadays believe they are entitled to the extra scratch without performing at a level deserving of it.

My point is that in this resturaunt, it is normal to order a bottle of wine or drinks from our full bar. The ambiance is very relaxed yet upscale. There are table clothes, dim lights, paino players, and jazz bands, and candle lights. Now, in that kind of environment, why order water or a coke?
Wow, I was not unsympathetic to you until now. People order water BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT TO DRINK, PUNK!

I don't like soda, and there are times when it's either inappropriate for me or the food doesn't lend itself towards or I'M JUST NOT IN THE MOOD FOR ALCOHOL.

Water is a way underrated drink, IMHO -- cool and refreshing, goes with everything.

And you are a sniveling, overpriveleged asshat.

PS Being a waiter IS hard, demanding work, and being a good waiter DOES demand smarts and proactive attention to detail. Having owned a restaurant, I always tip a minimum of 20%, and will go much, much higher for extraordinary service -- it's part of going out, and it's damn good karma. However, for you, I'd be willing to make an exception.
