In general: You can tell what kinds of tippers they are gonna be by what they drink. If they ask for water immediately or hot tea (which is free), you're gonna get a cheap as$ tip. The way I see it, if you're gonna hold back when it comes to dining out, whats the point of going out to eat in the first place. Anyways....

Generally speaking:

White people: They act snobby when dining out and they usually try to act like a big shot. Overall, they tip the best.

Black people: They come in and order the cheapest most common entree, like Fried Rice. They are very cheap tippers and a lot of times, they order 2 or 3 entress between 5 people. Oh yea, they always drink water.

Indian people: These are the worst. Usually, when a black table comes in, all of us waiters/waitresses are like "SH!T" but when we get an Indian table, it's all downhill from there. They'll all drink water (no ice), and order a couple entrees for everyone to share. Then they'll call you over to the table for extra chili sauce, and they'll ask for this and that. And when it comes to the check, they tip the worst, in fact, they are the cheapest people I know of.

Asian people: They will usually drink water and they will share a few entress between a small village 90% of the time. The wont ever tip more than 15% and usually it's a lot less than that.

Done.

<-- Indian and water drinker.

I know some people will just see the first line and ignore the rest of the post like they would ignore me at their place of work.

Let me start by saying its a tip, not like you earn it as soon as I walk in. If you expect it as part of your income, EARN IT. I work hard for my money and I better see you work hard for me to get my hard earned money. That being said, I have had some very pleasant experiences and some unpleasant ones.

2 weeks ago, the research group I work in decided to eat out. 4 Indians, 1 Asian, 4 Arab guys and 1 White guy. We received exceptional service and since it was a new restaurant, after we tipped (well I should add) the owner came up to our table and gave away free dessert. The waiter was an old guy, probably the owner's dad and treated us with great respect and made sure we were all seated together and received food on time (since we refuse to start eating until everyone gets their food even if it comes late). I would definately go there again.

On the flip side, I went with a group of friends and we were 2 Indian students, 1 Arab guy and like 6 White people. The indians and the Arab guy received HORRIBLE service, our food was late, we didnt get any water or tea like we asked and the waitress basically ignored us. It got so bad that everyone agreed to leave 0 tip and we wrote "B!tch" in the dessert and left it on the table for her.

So, lesson is, treat me fairly and receive a tip that reflects that or learn to live with a $0 tip. You might just be screwing yourself out of good tip by being prejudiced.

BTW - The bartender at the bar me and my friends frequent knows us by name because we treat him and the waitresses fairly for their service. I have even tipped when all I had was water because the waitress has never minded bringing me my water.

I drink water so I can enjoy the flavor of the food more by cleansing my pallette. I usually tip about between 10% and 20%, lowest was 0, highest was 30%

I agree with the other poster, its your damn job. If you feel the pay is too low and you need me to make it up get another one or just panhandle on the corner.

Listen you tard. You know that $1.50 soda you just ordered? Well expect to pay $2.00 or $2.50 now for it. You know that $14.99 dish of Chicken Parmigiana you just ordered? Expect that to go up to $16.49 or more. Don't you guys realize that restaurants charge the prices that they do because they don't have to foot most of the wage for busboys, waiters, hostesses, etc?

Normally the law is the restaurant is allowed to pay a wage substantially lower than minimum wage (as in $2-3 an hour in NY, where the minimum wage is more than double that). The employees then have to report to the restaurant how much money in tips they receive, and the restaurant has to supplement them so that they make minimum wage after pay+tips.

Here's an example.

There's 3 tables that the waitress gets over a 2 hour period. The bill comes out to $45 for each table and the waitress is tipped 15% off those checks. Thats about $20 the waitress gets over 2 hours. $10/hour. Waitresses pay is $2.35 an hour. So that is $12 an hour. All is good.

Now take those 3 tables and make it so the tables don't tip. You now have the waitress with just $2.35. Say minimum wage is $6.75 an hour. That is $8.80 the restaurant is losing. Guess what, that is going to be passed onto the customer. So your meal just went up a bare minimum $3, not to mention when the waitress gets payed when only 1 or 2 tables come in for her over a 6 hour period. In that 6 hour period, the restaurant is now paying an extra $27 to the waitress.

See how quickly prices would rise in a restaurant? And you better believe that the restaurant is not going to eat the loss.

Switch "professions"
It's not a proffession, it's a part time job while Im in college. I work two days a week and I average over $20 an hour. I love my job, however, I do notice different dining behavior between different races. It's the truth. I'll work one night, and on one table, the I might be tipped 10% and on the next table, I might be tipped 40%. And Im still happy, but these "differences" are pretty disgusting to me regarding fine dining.

So am I making all of this up? Why would I do that. I've worked at this resturaunt for about a year now part time and all Id say 9 times out of time, this is how Indians dine out. the room temperature water with no ice, the chili sauce on the side, then the cheap as$ tip. Maybe this doesnt apply to you. You are the exception my friend.

Another thing, for those who said tipping is not mandatory, and to get a good tip, you have to earn it.....I agree 100%. When a party will come in to eat, they dont immediatly owe me any kind of tip. But I am a damn good waiter and i have recieved many compliments and my overall tips average can vouch for this. However, IMO, it is totally unacceptable to walk into a nice resturaunt, receive excellent service, and tip less than 20%.

1. Nice resturaunt.
2. Excellent service.

In many different countries and cultures, tipping is an option and tips may generally be cheaper, but this is America. In greek culture, people spit on one another for some kind of good luck. Say a greek came to America and did that same thing, it would be unacceptable and insulting because it doesnt coincide with American culture. This same concept applies to fine dining in America.

Good service, good food, ellegant environment=20%+ tip. No exceptions.

LOL...I've lived here all my life (well ave for birth-1 but that doesn't count) and my friends force me to add to the tip in the end...I just don't like to rip. I come in and pay the money for the food...when its done, am I supposed to get it? Nope, its the waiter's job to do taht and I'm paying money for the overall SERVICE. That is why I don't like tipping.

Though once there was a guy at a place who came around like ONCE to fill up water (i drink water like crazy...a glass is gone in about 30 seconds for me and have had waiters just give me their pitcher) in the beginning and never came again even when i got up and looked for him. I wanted to leave nothing, but my other friend who is non confrontational like that made me leave 10% >_<

but yeah in general I'm a waiter's worst nightmare...drink a lot, and hates to tip

edit:

not asian nor indian, but on the same continent

tho i'm sure when i have real money and am outta college i may tip because i like the feeling that I do have the money to do it...but for the enxt 10 years till those loans are paid off (well lol i should graduate first) viva la cheapness!

If the service sucks then I will not tip. Otherwise I tip 15 to 20%. In the US, waiters, bartenders, etc paid less than minium wage and really make their living from tips.

I think tipping the waiter is pretty stupid. Most of the time all they do is take the food from the kitchen to your table. Oh yeah, pouring drinks. Oooh, tough stuff there.

They have no control over how busy they are, how fast the food comes out, how well the chefs make it, etc. Yet they will be tipped for better or worse depending on those factors...

I tip the customary 15% always. If the service sucks, you'll get less. Rarely will I tip higher unless somethign about the restaurant makes it damn good.

I have the perfect solution. Put up signs that you don't want black, asian or indian customers. It will probably work better than bitching and whining on an online board.

And if you don't make enough money, get a better paying job. Tipping is not mandatory, the current system is the fault of businesses and not customers.

It's pretty obvious you've never waited tables. My bro has and I know through him that most wait staff bust their asses for their money. The fact that it doesn't take special training or a degree doesn't mean it's easy.

I usually tip 20% and go up or down depending on the level of service. I went to breakfast with my mom, bro, and sis-in-law earlier today. My bro picked up the check and I left the tip. The bill was like $27 for the 4 of us. Normally I'd leave 5 or probably 6 but I left a $10 because the poor girl had to work on Christmas.

My worst dining experience was at a Denny's late at night (and yes, we were sober). We called someone to our table after waiting 10 minutes without even a drink order being taken. Once it was taken it took another 10 minutes for them to arrive and he didn't take our order. We were there nearly 30 minutes without placing our order so we added up how much our drinks were, left it on the table, and walked out. That Dennys is now an Egg Platter.

Look asshole, most wait staff doesn't earn minimum wage like everyone else. They're paid a couple bucks an hour and earn the rest of their salary through tips. If you don't want to leave a tip then stay the fsck home you cheap, inconsiderate, bastard. :|

I'd like to add that having a certain perception about a person or group based on their race is not only wrong but would probably affect the level of service you would deliver. If that's the case then maybe that's why they tip less.

once again it proves WAITRESSES gets better tips
what a sexist world we live in.
And yet, on average, men still make 20% more than women in similar positions.

What a sexist world we live in.

that is true. i am a waiter too, so i am biased and jealous.
maybe when i get a real job i'll quit bitching.

when i get a real job i'll quit bitching

LOL made me think of, George.

was a rebel from the day i left school
Grew my hair long and broke all the rules
I'd sit and listen to my records all day
With big ambitions of where i could play

My parents taught me what life was about
So i grew up the type they warned me about
They said my friends were just an unruly mob
And i should get a haircut and get a real job

Get a haircut and get a real job
Clean your act up and don't be a slob
Get it together like your big brother bob
Why don't you get a haircut and get a real job

I drink water at most resteraunts and tip about 15%. The only time I'll tip more than that is when the service is really good. That doesn't happen too often.

I order water ~85-90% of the time, because I'm cheap & I like to drink water, and since there have been several sutdies that suggest a link between pop & diabetes in children, we don't allow them to order soda's.

Tip varies greatly between raising hell & getting the entire meal comped or 25%.

i always tip 15% if the service was ok to good. i tip 0% if it was horrible which i've done twice. i would tip higher at times, but wouldnt calculate a percentage. the 15% is easy for me to calculate because in california, i just double the amount i was charged for tax since tax here is 7.75%

You know what? Bitch all you want, I'm still the one leaving the tip. If you give me that punk attitude which you probably will since I always order water when I'm eating out for lunch (sometimes beer with supper) I'll give you a crappy tip and will feel no regret about it. Usually I tip 15%, but act like a punk and I'll have no remorse about giving you that crappy tip.

yup...some people don't realize the waiters don't get much real salary. tips allow the restaurant to charge lowere food prices. and that is what matters to most customers.
